Story

“Alfraz is the youngest of my four children. It hurts me to see him suffer so much and with every laboured breath he takes, we die a thousand deaths in worry. I keep asking God why he didn’t give me a disease; I wish my baby was spared of this pain.” - Meheraj Midda, father

Unable to afford the surgery, Alfraz has been surviving on oral medication

Meheraj Midda is a hardworking family man from West Bengal. An embroider by profession, Alfraz is his fourth child. The family’s joy on welcoming Alfraz to their happy nest was short-lived when they discovered that he was born with a congenital heart defect. The abnormal distribution of blood leads to too much blood flowing in the lungs; causing extra fluid in the lungs. Result: Difficulty in breathing. Most children with this condition don’t make it beyond a couple of months. Alfraz, at age 7, is in dire need of an operation.

Meheraj has been pushing himself as the sole earner for his family of six

Meheraj, with financial responsibility of a family of six, can barely meet the cost of medical expenses with his meagre earnings of Rs. 9000 a month. He has come this far, with borrowings from family and well-wishers. His wife manages the home while he balances work along with Alfraz’s medical condition. He is constantly visiting hospitals, doctors and getting tests done to monitor the oral medication.

“We are simple people. With 3 healthy children, we never thought our fourth baby will have any cause of suffering. But there is no say in God’s will. After accepting the shock of Alfraz’s condition, I have been to many hospitals and doctors to find the best solution. The doctor tells us that we need to operate as we are running out of time but how will I afford the cost?"

I have knocked every door of opportunity. You are my last hope.”

“Alfraz is a happy child who loves studying, watching cartoons like Motu Patlu and playing with his sister Afreen. I want to focus on these happy moments he has as we have had so many dark moments; with every breath he is struggling to take, my guilt of not being able to afford his operation peaks too.”
