    Dipanshu

    from jaipur

“My eyes fill up with tears when I look at my son’s face. He is just 8 and he is going through so much. I tell him this is going to get over, that we will go back home soon but I know this is just the beginning. The cancer in his body is spreading rapidly and there is no way we can stop the treatment. But the cost...it is way beyond my means,” - Hemraj, Dipanshu’s father.

Hemraj hasn’t had the heart to tell his son that he is suffering from cancer. He hasn’t had the heart to tell that Dipanshu’s hair fall is not because of any medicine - it is because of the rigorous chemo that is also making him weak. This father is trying his best to not let his son’s smile fade away.

The local doctors had given up but how could Hemraj give up on his son?

A month ago, Dipanshu started getting sick. The little boy who loved going to school every morning could now hardly get up from his bed. He said his knees were paining and so were his elbows - no medicines were working and Hemraj and Geeta’s worries started getting worse.

“And then he started bleeding from his mouth and nose. We rushed him to the nearby hospital. They gave him some emergency medicine but advised us to take him to Jaipur, to a bigger hospital. I was stunned! What had happened to my son, all of a sudden,” - Hemraj, father.

It was here in the Jaipur hospital,Hemraj and Geeta got the shock of their life. Their happy and energetic Dipanshu was battling blood cancer.

He hates being locked up in one room

Dipanshu is suffering from Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia - a type of cancer of the blood and bone marrow. Apart from body ache, bleeding, bruising all over the body - one of the major consequences of cancer is the lowered immunity. Doctors have therefore asked Dipanshu to stay away from the outside world as much as possible. He needs to stay in one room with his parents.

“And he hates that. He hates not being able to go out and play with his younger sister. He video calls her every now and then and asks me when he can go back home. But with the virus situation outside, doctors have strictly asked us to let him out. The only time he leaves his room is when he goes for his chemo,” - Geeta, mother.

I am failing as a father, please help me save my son

It’s been a little over a month since Hemraj and Geeta have been in Jaipur with their 8-year-old son. They have left their 3-year-old daughter in the care of their relatives back at home. The parents are distraught - they have already spent over 5 lakhs after borrowing heavily from relatives. But Dipanshu needs further chemo and a bone marrow transplant to be permanently cured.

“They’ve told us that it would cost around 27 lakhs. I have never seen so much money in my life - I am a poor farmer from Mathura. I run my household with whatever little I make from my produce, I can never afford so much. I am failing as a father, only you can help me now,” - Hemraj.

Hemraj is ready to sell his only and very small piece of land back at home but even then he won’t be able to afford the life-saving transplant for his 8-year-old. Even a small contribution will help this family in distress.
