    daughter of yogita

    from New Delhi, Delhi

“It hasn’t been long since I learned about it. 15 days ago, the doctor sat me down and broke the news to me. It felt like I had some sort of an attack, at that moment - my body went numb, my legs gave out underneath me. The thought this happened to my small child breaks my heart. She is my reason for living and my only support. My sole wish is to live the rest of my life happily with my child, but cancer threatens to take that away from me.” - Yogita, mother

A seasonal fever turned out to be the cause of something much worse

Except for the occasional fevers and cold every few months, the 2-year-old was never one to fall sick easily. But a little over two weeks ago, she ran a high and persistent fever that lasted a few days. Her entire body had become pale, almost white, like she had no blood in her body - which is what alarmed her mother, Yogita.

“We went to several hospitals within our city limits in Meerut, and we found out that she had low platelet and high white blood cell levels. One of the doctors suspected it to be cancer, and I felt my heart drop at his words. When it turned out that she did have blood cancer, I was frozen in shock. I still can’t come to terms with it.” - Yogita

Chemotherapy alone is not enough, she needs a bone marrow transplant

As it turns out, her condition was detected when the disease had already passed the initial stage, which has put her life at much risk. She was started on chemotherapy immediately, and has completed one cycle so far. She still has a long way to go, but her mother is struggling to arrange for the rest of her chemotherapy.

The chemotherapy is killing the cancer cells in her body and keeping it controlled, but bone marrow transplant is the only way to ensure that she beats the disease and it stays gone. Without it, there are higher chances her cancer will return to ravage her. I can’t imagine losing my baby like this… the thought of anything happening to her kills me.” - Yogita

A single mother, she lives solely for her daughter

Yogita has been a single mother since she was born, after her husband abandoned them. He has been absent from her life from the very beginning, and never cared for his wife or child in any circumstance. Yogita had a job prior to her birth, but quit to become a full-time mother. Since her husband left them to fend for themselves, she has been living with her parents and bringing up her daughter, under the care of her brother.

My husband has long deserted us - ever since he learned we had a girl child. My brother contacted him, when we found out about her condition, and requested him to come by to see his ailing daughter. He came to see her, but as soon as he learned the cost of her treatment and realised that we needed his help, he up and left. He refused to help us in any way, and I couldn't do anything stop him or make him stay…” - Yogita.

Out of all options, she is reaching out for help in saving her only daughter

Yogita’s family has gone above and beyond to help her start her treatment. But with the hospital bills piling up, it is getting harder for them to meet the expenses. So far, the family has spent INR 6 lakh rupees, and Yogita feels an imaginable amount of guilt for having to depend on her family in this time of hardship.

“My brother is doing all he can to make arrangements for my baby’s treatment. He’s willing to go as far as selling his house. As grateful as I am to my family, I feel extremely upset that they have to make such big sacrifices for me and my daughter. A few days ago, her condition deteriorated so drastically that she had to be admitted in the ICU. Thankfully, she got better… but we had to spend a substantial amount to pay off her bills. Now, doctors say her treatment will another 25 lakh rupees and last the next 2 to 3 years. How on earth will I afford this?” - Yogita

She is her mother’s only hope for the future, and she can’t imagine losing her to such a dreadful disease. They are in dire need of your support. Click here to donate and help Yogita save her daughter.
