    Child of Sanjoy

    from Alipur Duar, West Bengal

“Every evening whenever I make him study at home, he will quietly shed his tears and will slowly turn his face towards me to ask, ‘Maa, why I always study at home? Why can’t I go to school and study, just like other kids?’ I don’t know how I can explain this little child, that all our money goes on his treatment to save him from Thalassemia” – Poly Das, Mother.

First we thought it to be a regular fever

Just like any new parents, Poly and Sanjoy Das from Alipurduar, West Bengal, were also on cloud nine when they held their new born baby for the first time, and could not stop themselves from thanking God again and again. But everything changed when their little boy, who was by then one year old, got his first fever accompanied with extreme crankiness and fatigue.

“First we thought it to be a regular fever and got medicine from a local doctor. But after series of fevers, we became impatient and thought that it should stop. We went to the biggest hospital in our area. The doctor carried out tests and found out his haemoglobin had dropped to 5g/dl. There was no option but immediate blood transfusion.” – Sanjoy Das, Father.

We came to know that our son is suffering from Thalassemia Major

And after this blood transfusion, the child’s fever subsided and he was discharged from hospital in two days. But unfortunately, just after a month the fever came back with the same intensity and same symptoms.

Narrating the days, Poly says, “We went to the hospital again. This time again the haemoglobin dropped to 6g/dl. Along with blood transfusion, the doctor also suggested haemoglobin analysis. And through this test we came to know that our son is suffering from Thalassemia Major - a hereditary blood disorder that causes severe anaemia and life-long dependence on blood transfusions”.

The doctor said that the Bone Marrow Transplant would cost forty-five lakhs

Since then, every month the child is getting blood transfusion. However, unable to believe the verdict, the parents simultaneously went from hospital to hospital, but everywhere they got the same answer. And finally with the recommendation from the doctor, the parents came to Bengaluru, where the doctors after conducting tests confirmed the condition and suggested Bone Marrow Transplant.

Lamenting on his condition, Sanjoy says, “The doctor said that the Bone Marrow Transplant would cost forty-five lakhs which would include the cost of Pre-Transplant Test and analysis, medicine cost, transplant cost, room charges and post-transplant care. With a meagre income of just five thousand, how could I even dream of providing treatment to my son.”

We do not have any reason to live without our son

Realising that arranging such a hefty amount would be impossible, the parents brought the child back home and continued blood transfusion, arranging for which they had to sell their land, jewellery and even had to borrow money from their friends. However, with time the frequency of blood transfusion has increased, and now the parents are left with no option but Bone Marrow Transplant.

With a grave face, Poly says, “One by one we have sold anything and everything in our home. We don’t mind, if all these things can bring our son back to us. Our heart breaks every time we see him suffering. Please help us, for we do not have any reason to live without our son.”

Help these parents get back their son again
