“Nine years back, when I lost my little daughter the day she was born, I realised loss in true sense. And now I am feeling the same pain again, when I see my children’s despairing future, owing to my cancer.” – Bijay Chhetri, patient.
For 36 years old Bijay Chhetri from Alipurduar, West Bengal, his whole life revolves around his family. Because of them he had taken the extreme pain of leaving them behind, and travelling far away to Bangalore. Till last month he has been working day and night as a waiter in a restaurant, so that far home his aging parents, his wife and his seven-year-olds twin children would not face any hardships.
The doctor said there was nothing serious and that the lump would vanish by itself
It looked like even after putting him through such hard times, destiny was not done with testing Bijay for his perseverance, and last year during January, Bijay developed a small lump on the right side of his neck, which was noticed by one of his co-workers.“After consulting my friends, I rushed to a best possible doctor. The doctor examined the lump and gave few tests. After going through the test results, he confirmed that there was nothing serious. The doctor gave medicines with assurance, that the lump would vanish by itself in a span of few days.” – Bijay
The doctor gave medicine for TB, which further worsened his condition
Unfortunately, things did not turn out the way the doctor prophesied. Neither the lump subsided, and in addition to that Bijay had to go through the same chain of events again and again. In six-months Bijay went to four to five doctors, but nobody provided any relief. But it was after six months, a discovery by doctor that further complicated the matter.“The doctor said he had TB (Tuberculosis), and also suggested a multi-specialty hospital and biopsy. He was shocked. However, he went to the hospital. But the doctors at the multi-specialty hospital negated the requirement for biopsy, and after much difficulty prescribed medicine for TB. But the medicines further worsened his condition with unbearable side effects.” – Bijay’s wife.
For many days I called my wife and my parents but could not tell them about my condition
Unable to tolerate the suffering and after consulting few more doctors, Bijay finally went to the doctor who suggested biopsy. And this time when the doctor conducted tests, he found out that Bijay has cancer and suggested Bijay to approach a hospital specialised in cancer care. Bijay finally approached HCG, where the doctor conducted tests again and found out Bijay has Stage 2 Nasopharyngeal cancer - a rare type of cancer that affects the part of the throat connecting the back of the nose to the back of the mouth.“When the doctor confirmed my condition, my entire body started shivering. At that moment I got completely blank of the surrounding and the visual of my children ran in front of my eyes. Even that visual also got blurred because of tears. For many days I called my wife and my parents but could not tell them. I told them only after the doctor asked for immediate chemotherapy.” – Bijay
Please help and allow me a chance to fight for my life
For Bijay and his family, that is just the beginning of hurdles. Exploiting all his savings in wrong treatments and running after multiple doctors, Bijay is left with no money. Just for first chemotherapy, his wife had to sell all her jewellery and had to take loans from fellow villagers. But now to save Bijay, they have an estimate of rupees 10 lakhs, which includes the cost of tests, medicines, room charges, support care, etc., along with the procedure cost.“Whenever I call home, my family hides their distress. Even my little daughter says she is fine and asks me to focus on my treatment. But I know very well in what condition they would be, as I could not send any money for past few months. At present I barely have Rs.10,000/- in my account. With this money, either I have to take care of my family or I can hardly buy few medicines. Please help and allow me a chance to live, for my family and especially my two little children.” – Bijay
