"If we don’t keep getting her blood transfusions, she becomes extremely weak. She starts bleeding from her mouth. Her condition becomes critical, and I just...
I just want my daughter to get better. Doctors are saying only a bone marrow transplant can save her life and that for now we need to start some therapy. How can I afford any of that? I'm just a farmer..."
— Ramji, father, breaking into tears

In April of this year, little Asha Deepthi, barely 9 years old, was diagnosed with COVID. Her parents, unable to afford anything more, had tried getting her treated at a free government hospital. But when her condition kept deteriorating despite recovering from COVID, they were asked to take her to another city for further treatment.

“We were already so worried; she had been getting weaker and weaker with each passing day, and then her skin started turning yellow! Doctors diagnosed her with severe jaundice, and asked us to take her to Hyderabad when normal medicines weren’t working, saying it might be her only chance. That terrified us, and we brought her here immediately!”

Tests revealed a truth far worse than just jaundice

“She started bleeding from her mouth regularly, and we knew something was terribly wrong. She would just be sitting somewhere and suddenly blood would start pouring from her nose and mouth. Sometimes it’s a lot, sometimes a little, but it's scary each time because there’s a chance she will faint. Once we reached Hyderabad, we came to know the truth. Tests revealed that our daughter has Aplastic Anemia, an extremely dangerous and life-threatening condition! They’re saying the only way to save her life now is to get a bone marrow transplant, a procedure we can never afford!— Anantalakshmi, mother

She needs urgent treatment

Little Asha has Aplastic Anemia, a serious condition in which the bone marrow doesn’t make enough new blood cells. Because of this, Asha has less oxygen sent to her organs, increased risk of infection, and increased risk of bleeding problems. She already bleeds regularly from her mouth now, and once it starts it’s becoming increasingly hard to stop it. It's just a matter of time before she starts having extreme breathing difficulty, crippling body-aches, and constant dizziness. All this leading to an inevitable end for the 9-year-old: an untimely death. The only way to stop all this is a bone marrow transplant, and Asha needs to start her immunosuppressive therapy immediately.

“She now needs blood transfusions every two days! I’m just a farmer; we were already struggling to get by from month to month after the terrible year we all had. The last few months have been even more of a terrible strain on us, trying to afford so many blood transfusions. We’ve already spent lakhs of rupees, money borrowed from friends and relatives. But we need at least 8 more lakhs to save her life! As a farmer it would take me years to save that much money, and by then... our little Asha...
We have the chance to save her now, before the disease destroys her, but we need your help.
— Ramji
