    Arpita Karmakar

    from Kolkata, West Bengal

"Where we come from, nobody wants daughters, they only want sons. But our world revolves around Arpita and Pushpita. Many relatives told us that cancer can't be treated, that we are just wasting money on Arpita instead of saving it for Pushpita's marriage. But how can I give up on her? I brought her to this big city hospital that I can hardly afford because I will do whatever it takes to save her." - Sandeep, father

It all started with her fainting in school one day

Sandeep and Anindita were worried, but it was a one-time incident so they soon put it out of their minds. But then, just a few weeks later, Arpita started coughing constantly. It got so bad that sometimes she used to cry because of how much her chest hurt. When the worried parents took her to a doctor, they got a diagnosis they never suspected: Arpita had Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia (ALL) - blood cancer.

They've already spent lakhs on their daughter's chemotherapy, but it's not enough

"I felt God finally answered my prayers to cure her blood cancer, but when we heard it will require 1 more year of treatment and 8 more lakhs, my heart just sank. If we don't get this huge amount soon, we will lose our daughter not to cancer but to our inability as parents to protect her." - Anindita, mother

Sandeep runs a grocery shop where he barely earns Rs. 4,000 a month. After looking after his wife and 2 daughters, he isn't left with much. With a loan of about 5 lakhs so far for Arpita's treatment, he is not sure how many years it will take to repay even that amount.

There was a time when you couldn't catch Arpita without a smile, now pain and fear follow her everywhere

"She used to be such an active and happy child, spreading smiles everywhere. She used to love making people laugh. But now so many months have passed and... she herself has stopped smiling. Mostly, it's because of the pain, she says. But sometimes she cries remembering the day when she had to shave her whole head, fearing it meant she didn't have much time left." - Anindita

The only way to save Arpita is to make a generous contribution, so that she can be cancer-free and go back to her home with her family.
