On October 1, Arjun's elderly parents received a call about their son being hit by a bike. On rushing to the accident spot, they saw their 28-year-old son lying in a pool of blood on the road, with his wounds open and unattended for over an hour.
"He was hit by another bike on his way back home from work. If only he wasn't left unattended for so long, then we could have saved him from losing so much blood. Now, it's been 20 days and despite 6 surgeries, he has been unresponsive. He has multiple fractures and suffered a traumatic blow to his head." - Shailavathamma, mother
A hit-and-run road accident has left Arjun with a traumatic head injury
A normal day turned into a nightmare for this family after this hit-and-run accident case. A bike in full speed rammed into Arjun's bike and sending him flying off the two-wheeler while he was returning home to Kolar from a busy day of field work. Even though they have filed an FIR, at this moment, this family wants nothing more than for Arjun to wake up.
It has been weeks, and he is still unresponsive and in a coma
The swelling in his head hasn't reduced and the only line of treatment now is to keep him in the ICU till it does. The daily costs of ICU was exceeding Rs.60,000 and it is getting beyond their limited means to be able to arrange that.Arjun's elder sister, Asha, who is married, rushed to be there for her brother, but now is terrified of a future where her aged parents have nobody to depend on except Arjun. She even approached Arjun's company for some insurance respite, but as a contractual labourer on their fields, he was not entitled to receive any benefit as that of a permanent employee.
“Seeing me run from pillar to post, my father asked me if he should go and work in the fields to be able to earn some money at this age. He has asthma and can barely talk without wheezing for breath. So, when I heard him say that, I broke down and I know my brother too would have been so hurt hearing those helpless words come out of my father’s mouth. I am also torn, hiding his true critical condition from my mother who is a heart patient, out of fear that the truth will worsen her health." - Asha, sister, sobbing
Multiple fractures and wounds have aggravated his bed sores
With his right leg sustaining severe injuries, a rod had to be inserted into it. And now they fear an infection will grip him because the delay and negligence in dressing his wounds has aggravated his situation terribly. They wanted to immediately shift him to a city hospital but even that happened with a lot of dire consequences."My brother, who needs 24x7 ICU support, was transported without oxygen support in the ambulance. Nurses have informed us that his condition is really bad because his dressing wasn't changed in the previous hospital for 2 weeks and so now his wounds have started festering. My brother is lying with bed sores and pus in his wounds which can be so dangerous for him.” - Asha, sister
Being a heart patient, his elderly mother is unable to come to terms with her son's condition and longs for him to wake up
Arjun's mother, Shailavathamma, is a heart patient and this news has left her devastated and taken a toll on her health. She hasn't been allowed to see Arjun for the last two days out of the fear that she wouldn't be able to handle it. She mortgaged her gold and life-savings of close to INR 7.5 lakhs to continue Arjun's treatment but they are still short of INR 20 lakhs.A responsible son and brother, Arjun has several responsibilities over his head that he needs to fulfill. He also has a loan on his name taken to build a house for his parents. His retired parents, Chalapathi and Shailavathamma, will no longer be able to physically exert themselves in labour work to be able to fend for themselves now, if at all something happens to Arjun.
