Akshata, a 15-year-old girl, should have been busy going to school and spending time with friends. However, fate has been very cruel to her. She is lying on the bed in the hospital with her right leg amputated due to Cancer.

Akshata does not remember the love of her mother whom she lost at a very young age. All she knows is her fragile grandmother’s care and her poor father’s affection. These two people mean the world to her. Though poor, she is a happy carefree girl who always had a positive attitude toward life.

“The pain I suffered from before my leg got amputated is terrifying. I still cry every time I think about it. When doctors told me that I might lose my leg, I could not think of anything. I just wanted the pain to stop. If losing my leg was the only way out, so be it, I told them.”  - Akshata

A year ago, Akshata met with an accident. She had to undergo a surgery in her right hand.



Life took an ugly twist thereafter. She was soon diagnosed with Ewing’s Sarcoma. It is a type of cancerous tumor that grows in the bones or the soft tissues around the bones.

“Akshata is a very caring and kind girl. She is always smiling no matter how difficult life is. Her mother died when Akshata was just a baby. She doesn’t even remember her mother. More than me caring for her, it is Akshata who takes care of me in my old age. I cannot see her suffer like this. A young girl like her losing her leg is so unfortunate.” – Bheemeshwari, grandmother

Akshata’s father, Shankarappa, works as a  garbage collector. He makes a modest earning and takes cares of his old mother and three daughters. Shankarappa has seen his daughter fight cancer bravely and feels helpless that he is unable to help her in her struggle. He is unable to arrange funds for her further medical care to recover.

Akshata’s has already lost her leg; however, she has to continue chemotherapy for the next 4-5 months to fully recover.
