    Aishwarya Adhikari

    from Kolkata, West Bengal

“I dreamed of becoming a professor and every day I was getting closer to that dream. I was about to apply for my Ph.D. this year and I was so happy that it was becoming a reality. But my life just changed overnight. I was diagnosed with cancer. It came out of nowhere, no symptoms or warnings; just like that and it ruined everything for me.” - Aishwarya

It’s like I have forgotten what it was to live normally

24-year-old Aishwarya sits on the hospital bed often wondering- where did it all go wrong? She was a strong woman who did whatever she set her mind to and now, she can hardly talk without being tired. She suffers from Acute Myeloid Leukemia, a cancer of the blood and bone marrow that progresses rapidly.

“I was diagnosed about 6 months ago. I didn’t even have the time to accept my condition, my treatment just began immediately. I had such immense pain in my thigh that I couldn’t walk anymore, I couldn’t control my urine or stool. For every little thing, my family had to help me. I felt very guilty, frustrated and angry about it. It has all been very traumatizing for me, spending most of my time in the hospital, getting injections after injections and taking innumerable medicines. It’s like I have forgotten what it was to live normally.” - Aishwarya

She needs a Bone Marrow Transplant to survive

While Aishwarya is fighting a battle against cancer, her parents are struggling to keep up with the expenses. They have spent all their savings and are neck-deep in debts taken from everyone they know. They have gone above and beyond their limits to save their daughter, but they could only manage half the treatment. Aishwarya has successfully completed her chemotherapy but to survive cancer, she needs a bone marrow transplant.

“Watching our daughter suffer like this has been nothing short of hell. But all that pain she went through is showing good results. She is a lot better now and we can’t wait to see her get back to her chirpy self. But she needs a bone marrow transplant to beat cancer and we are failing to afford that.” - Jayati, mother

“I did all that a middle-class man would do, claiming insurance, borrowing from people, taking loans...but it is still not enough. She has responded to the treatment so well and I don’t want to stop now. I don’t want to lose my daughter. The doctors have done the tests and they have confirmed that I can be the donor. All we need now is your support. Please help us, you are our only hope.” - Tapan, father
