I am Prerna Panwar, a wildlife conservationist, currently working with Wildlife Trust of India on training front line forest staff in wildlife crime prevention across India and Bhutan.
I have recently been selected as a champ leader in Yuva Prerna Yatra, 2017, to a life-changing bus journey. The Yuva Prerna Yatra takes selected highly motivated Youths to a bus journey of 1000 kms in Himalayas with a purpose to awaken an entrepreneurial spirit within them.
I have recently started my social and environmental enterprise dealing in the manufacture of paper bags. The paper bags provide a better alternative to the environmentally-hazardous polythene bags for packaging purposes. Through skills training in paper bags making, I want to transform women and youth and create a platform to create their own income. While utilising locally available materials, it will aim to keep promoting environmental sustainability through value addition and creating rural livelihoods.
This initiative will help in multiple levels:
• Social impact: contributes to the empowerment of women and youth by providing training in paper making, jewellery manufacturing and entrepreneurship skills.
• Environmental impact: By producing ecologically sound paper bags, the initiative provides a good alternative to the environmentally hazardous polythene bags.
• Economic impact: By employing youth and women in the production process and purchasing agricultural wastes from farmers, the initiative generates employment and income for the local communities. The initiative will also transform local communities through skills training.
