I'm extremely excited to announce that I’ve been selected to join this year's Global Himalayan Expedition (GHE). GHE is an initiative that focuses on providing clean energy and education access to remote off-grid communities across the region of Ladakh.
This September, along with a group of 18-19 volunteers, I'll trek through the Himalayas to a village called Ralakung. This 1200-year-old village nestles in the PHE block of Zanskar. The village is home to 110 People and 11 households. They have a school that currently has 8 students.
Don’t get me wrong. They are not poverty stricken. What they lack in access to technology, they make up with for through a rich and endearing culture.
To give you a perspective of how inaccessible Ralakung is, know that the Village remains cut off for 7 months in a year due to heavy snowfall!
As part of the expedition, we will be electrifying the village by setting up 10-12 solar microgrids. This will cater to indoor and outdoor LED lighting for the whole village, powering it with sustainable, clean electricity.
During our journey, we will stop at the village of Phe to set up a “Himalayan Innovation Centre” in a government school where children from nearby villages come to study. The school has 80 students and we will help them set up offline internet (a way to access local curriculum, Wikipedia, Ted Talks and other such educational providers). To access this we will be setting up computers - a first for them!
I really believe in this cause and believe that electricity is a right to all. Electricity is something we in the cities thrive on, but there are many out there still living in darkness. It’s time we help the village of Ralakung and turn darkness into light.
GHE’s objective is to implement technological solutions in a sustainable, scalable, and environmentally beneficial manner, leading to an overall development of the community while empowering the local village's population.
