Summary

There is a desperate need to save Namma Bengaluru and a way forward towards making our city livable and sustainable is by working towards environment education at a grass-root level.

The initiative to setup water testing laboratories in numerous schools across the city in coordination with Dr T.V. Ramachandra stems from the harsh reality that environmental literacy is as low as 3.5%. It is, therefore, extremely imperative to induct environmental education at all levels to ensure the upcoming generation is more sensitive and sensible in handling and nurturing the environment and inculcates better lifestyle decisions to protect the ecological balance.

In an effort to kickstart this effort, recipient of the Namma Bengalurean of the Year 2016 award - Dr T.V. Ramachandra utilized the Rs 2 lakh cash reward by distributing it to select six schools (who have been actively engaged in environment education) on 1st April 2017 at a workshop on the Status of Arekere Lake held at Adamya Chetana (jointly organized by Adamya Chetana, Energy & wetlands Research Group, IISc and Namma Bengaluru Foundation).

How you can help

In an attempt to take this initiative further, Namma Bengaluru Foundation requests all concerned Bengalureans to help raise an additional Rs 2 lakh to setup laboratories in other schools to assess water quality. This would help in bringing awareness among the children (next generation decision makers) about contamination, causal factors as well as help in evolving strategies to minimize water contamination.

Awakened children with adequate environment concepts will ensure the quality of air, water and environment is not compromised through illogical decisions (as done by current decision makers).

A seed grant of Rs 30,000 to Rs 35,000 per school would help in assessing the water quality through essential parameters (pH, hardness, chemical ions, etc.). This grant would act as catalyst in developing a full-fledged state-of-the-art water testing labs in select schools in each ward of Bengaluru.

Other ways you can help

If you are a concerned Bengalurean and want to plant the seed of safeguarding our city’s environment among the future generation, then contribute towards this initiative and help in enhancing environmental literacy, which would help in building a sustainable Bengaluru.

Beyond money –  this initiative also needs your help in spreading the word. Be it through word-of-mouth or through various social media platforms – do educate other Bengalureans on this effort to setup water testing labs across the city.

Dr. TV Ramachandra is at present the Coordinator of Energy and Wetlands Research Group (EWRG), Convener of Environmental Information System (ENVIS) at Centre for Ecological Sciences (CES) and a professor at Indian Institute of Science (IISc).
