There are certain things in life that we take for granted, our morning routine is one of them. As we often hear Hon. PM Narendra Modi push the Swachch Bharat Campaign, one often wonders if the situation is that bad.
Our editor came to know about one such village, Umbare, just 70 odd kilometres from Mumbai but a different world altogether.
The families in Umbare work as contract workers at nearby amusement park, drivers and labourers at construction site. With annual salary not more than INR 60,000 per year per household and each household of 7-10 members, the situation is dire.
The govt has a very useful subsidy scheme of Rs 12,000 but as per the Gram Panchayat, they can't avail subsidy for 12 families as they shifted here post 2011-12 census. (We've official letter from Gram Panchayat regarding the same)
The census forms the baseline, which is fair, but it is more than fair for us to get together and contribute our bit.
The foundation has a long experience of working in rural India and building low-cost sanitation, housing and water solution. Their model is sustainable and functional. We saw some photos and video testimonials from their project in Gujarat and they can really help build a proper toilet.
Each toilet is built with water storage, 2 taps, proper washing area attached to the toilet and 2 feet inner tiling.
Each toilet costs INR 22,000 to build
Total cost for the project comes to INR 2,64,000
