"It has been 20 days since my babies were born and all I could do for them is just slowly rub their heads with my hands. I'm afraid that even a slightest jostle could make their respiratory distress worse. My scars and the breast pump are the only things that show my motherhood as of now. I can't imagine holding my fragile twins without hurting them. Their bodies are barely visible with all the tubes fitted over their tiny bodies. I stand all alone and keep looking at them not knowing if I can ever hold them in my arms. Fear and anxiety are my only companions. I can never imagine going back home with empty hands." - Kanchana, Mother of premature twins.

Kanchana underwent an urgent C-section during her 7th month of pregnancy after an unexpected complication

Narayanan and Kanchana were thrilled when they were finally going to be parents after 18 long years of marriage. It was natural for them to take absolute care needed during the pregnancy. They followed the doctor's instructions religiously. They spent all day and night discussing the names and other plans for their babies. They saved every rupee for them. Little did they know that they have to lose everything to save their babies. Kanchana's unexpected early labor pain came as a big blow to them.

"I don't remember anything after I was rushed to the hospital, the pain was unbearable. When I opened my eyes, my babies were not anywhere near me. I was relieved to hear that they are alive but no one prepared me for what they would look like. I stood shell shocked seeing their tiny bodies. They haven't opened their eyes yet but they were already battling for their life. They were struggling to breathe and I stood there weeping for hours not knowing what I can do to save them." - Kanchana.

Preemie twin babies of Kanchana will lose the battle of life without  treatment for the next two months

Twin babies of Kanchana are extremely low weight weighing only 990 and 900 gms respectively. They have severe respiratory distress. They need NICU treatment for at least the next 2 months to recover completely. The two little warriors are responding well to the the treatment, they have high chance of survival and complete recovery if the treatment is continued.

"I'm grateful for the doctors for every little time they open their eyes. I feel hopeful when doctors say they are responding to the treatment but the next moment my world becomes dark completely because their condition is not predictable. Sometimes they take scan at midnight and doctors rush to them to give some medicines. My babies are fighting very hard every minute. It is very painful to see them go through this. I feel like the unluckiest woman in this world. To see your babies fighting for life and not doing about it is a curse and I can't bear this." - Kanchana.

These poor parents have exhausted everything they had and there is nothing they could do now to save their twins

While Kanchana breaks into tears often , she is consoled by the doctors and nurses every time, giving her hope, but Narayanan is left all alone on the roads, running to everyone he knew asking for money to save his twins. With the little money he gets, he buys medicines and they hardly has anything left to even eat. He is a daily wage worker earning only Rs 300 per day. He was not able to go for work since the day Kanchana was admitted in the hospital.

"My wife has not recovered yet from the C section, she is in so much of pain but she never complains about that. I cannot leave her alone. I  have to go out at least thrice in a day to buy medicines, sometimes in the night also. In the remaining time, I go out to beg for money. There are times I return with empty hands, and those days I never had the strength to see my babies. I have exhausted everything I had. Now I have no one to turn to for help. I don't know what I can do to save my babies. " - Narayanan.
