I am a software engineer at TCS (Tata Consultancy Services) and have graduated in Computer Science from WBUT (West Bengal University of Technology).
Since a very young age I was fascinated with aeroplanes and how they fly so high. I always wanted to be a pilot (applied for Indian airforce but got rejected) and unfortunately never got to study aerodynamics or related technology in my graduation due to limited streams at the university. All my knowledge, whatever I have, comes from the fond of technology and my curiosity.
I always think about how would it feel like riding a small plane which I made by my own. It always makes me excited and happy that someday it might be possible. For now, I want to make a remote controlled (long distance) RC plane which has a camera mounted on it and plan to see my city Kolkata how it looks from a hight of 1 km or so. Later in the project I plan to make the planes takeoff and land itself using GPS.
To do this, I need to make a smaller model of minimum configuration (brushless motor, ESC, rechargeable LIPO 3 cell 11.8v batteries, batteries charger, servos, transmitter-receiver, propeller and plane parts) which would cost at around 10K INR. Then I need to make a bigger model with high thrust motor more batteries, camera, Raspberry PI and chipsets, FM radio equipments for radio communication, GPS device; all of these devices would cost at most 50K INR. I mentioned the upper limit of the costing to because I really want it to fly and I should be able to compensate a few setbacks. So, I have asked for 60K here to be able to kickstart this concept into reality.
My long term goal is to make an RC plane which can carry a payload of 2 KG from point A to point B distanced at 20 KM without manual intervention. Then at landing location it's batteries (rechargeable) can be replaced and the plane should be ready for another takeoff. Consider mobile phone network for instance, the signal from a handheld mobile can't go for more than 2 km in a city and yet you can talk to anyone in the world. My goal is to make a network of these takeoff/landing location (20km distanced) and make an RC plane carry a payload of 2KG to a distance of 200 KM within 1.5 hour (max) without exhausting any kind of fossil fuel. All batteries would be rechargeable to bring down the cost of transportation per flight. Infect, we can bring down the cost as low as Rs-15/- for 200KM (10 flights).
This kind of technology would revolutionise the transportation industry and would have a big impact. But, for now, it only exists on paper.
After I finish this project, I will send the beautiful top view pictures of Kolkata from the plane itself. It only gets me more excited to wait and plan for it.
