Why am I fundraising?

Pushpa is a wonderful young woman; hard-working, ever-smiling, conscientious and a great mother to her two little children, who are 3 and 5 years old. With already existing setbacks of poverty, lack of education, a forced marriage at 16, life was particularly harsh when Pushpa found herself all alone at 22. Her husband passed away leaving behind two young children, no money, no home, and lots of hospital bills. Kicked out of her husband's home by in-laws during this time of grief and mourning, Pushpa faced social ostracism and isolation. Despite her own health problems, she has single-handedly toiled hard to earn a living for her children, and her old mother. She works as domestic help starting her day at 5:30 am every single day.

This family of 4 lives in extremely poor conditions. Their home, as you can see in the picture, is a tent held together with a few logs of wood. Cold, damp, and unsafe, this family is left unprotected, and deprived of life's basic need. Every time it rains, their little "jhopdi" with a tarp roof is flooded. Pushpa's 3 year old daughter, who is terrified of thunder and lightning, clings to her mother and cries all night. The family waits in agony wondering if today is the day when the winds carry their tent away.

Their life's most ardent wish is to live in their own home, be dry, warm, and safe. Pushpa has a small piece of land her father had given her, which is where she plans to build.

What do I plan to do with the funds?

Our target is to raise Rs. 5 Lakhs through this campaign. Your contribution will help build a home with 1 bedroom, living room, kitchen and bath for this family of 4. 

FAQs

Pushpa was found eligible for a government home loan of Rs. 1 lakh, based on the size of her land.  She has applied for this, and it is in process.
