When it was first built, we have seen the skatepark act as a catalyst for many young children in the neighbourhood. Mostly self-taught they would spend hours together at the skatepark discovering their own tricks and combos as they perfected their balance. It brought out their confidence and abilities to interact with others who would visit Cirrus from around the world. Several of them come from lesser privileged backgrounds with regular incidents of violence in their households. The skatepark was what proved to be a safe space for them. The park at Cirrus has no rules and is open to all throughout the day and throughout the year. It makes the skaters using the space take responsibility for it thereby making it feel like their own space. The constant influx of international tourist and skaters creates a bubble of creativity and engagement at Cirrus that most skateparks in India cannot provide.
But in recent years the park has been in a dilapidated state that makes the space unsafe to use. This has resulted in many children frequenting the space lesser. We want to rebuild and extend the skatepark for the local community with the help of skateboarders and volunteers who are ready to work on this.
