Reena ji lives in  one of the poorest districts in the country where basic health and amenities are far away. When she is unable to get rations or move out of her house, what can she do? Reena ji and 29 lakh elders like her live in the poorest districts of the country and are unable to access basic amenities needed for a healthy life. When they receive a call from our volunteers, they share these problems which are resolved within 72 hours.

While COVID affects us all, why are these elders most at risk?

50% of Corona related deaths are in the 60+ age group, which puts every senior citizen at high risk. The risk is even higher in rural areas where communities face challenges in practising behaviours necessary to prevent them from contracting the virus and in accessing resources they need to live. At such a time their greatest need is for someone to listen to their problems, and help resolve them.
Every day senior citizens remain exposed, poses a threat to their life. We need to act Now.

Surakshit Dada-Dadi, Nana-Nani Abhiyaan aims to safeguard the lives of these elders in 28 of India’s most vulnerable districts. A collaborative effort between NITI Aayog, Piramal Foundation and District administrations, the campaign alerts communities against the spread of COVID-19 and educates them on safe practices. Each senior citizen has a designated volunteer who enquires about their problems and follows-up to ensure that their grievances are addressed by the local administration.

How will your contribution help?

Your contribution of INR 1000 can help 50 elders like Reena ji cope against the threat of the pandemic.
The campaign is designed such that we are be able to reach a larger number of people at a small cost by working in partnership with the local government who are doing their best to support these citizens. Our Volunteers speak directly to elders, understanding the problems they face and connecting each person’s needs to the appropriate government services.

Your contribution will help in:
  • Recruiting and training volunteers to call elders with empathy and care, teach them safe practices and enquire about their problems
  • Managing the data to track and follow up with 2.9 million elders to ensure that their problems get addressed
  • Communicating the needs of elders to the District Administration so they can provide appropriate support.
Below are some testimonials of elders who have benefitted from these services

"During my Roza, my son and I could eat food because of your arrangements. You are no less than Allah to me” – Humbling words by Surya Khatun (Dhubri, Assam) to a volunteer who was able to secure funds for her survival
“For the first time ever, it feels like someone cares about the elderly” – Gulaam Ahmed and his wife, Nasreen Khatun (Begusarai, Bihar) had tears in their eyes because they were delighted to interact with someone who cared about them.

“There was nobody to talk to her and today after days she finally had somebody to share her feelings with” – Family member of a resident of Chetia Village (Sonbhadra, Uttar Pradesh) who was suffering from mental health problems and confided in our volunteer.

There are several such heart rending stories of support and gratitude coming from across districts. You can read more about our campaign on our page. Please stay tuned to our social media pages for regular updates on the campaign
