Help Rakesh take care of 850+ abandoned and injured dogs

48-year-old IT entrepreneur, Rakesh Shukla never had a dog growing up. “10 years ago I got my first dog and she’s the only dog that is not a rescue. I had to scramble to get the house prepared. And soon I found another pup that came running to me and I brought her to my office. Eventually I started bringing in dogs that I rescued from the streets to my office and soon I started working on a plan to create a place for them to stay,” says Rakesh.

Soon enough, Rakesh decided to bring any stray or abandoned dog home and has adopted an immense number of dogs. There were protests from his wife in the beginning so he made his office a home for all these dogs. As time went on and the number grew, he bought some land in Dodballapur, outside Bengaluru, where he built a farm to shelter all his dogs. He registered an NGO “Voice of Stray Dogs” (VOSD) to rescue and rehabilitate injured and abandoned dogs.

"We don’t refuse to admit any dog. However, there are guidelines on the kind of rescues we do. We don’t take pets or healthy street dogs. Otherwise, we take in almost every kind of dog that needs help. Diseased dogs, those hit by vehicles, having maggot wounds, and those with disabilities are sheltered and treated", says Rakesh. The farm space is made in a way that the dogs can run around and take a swim whenever they want. He has employed few staff members, who are trained in veterinary aid to look out for the dogs. Today he lives along with and looks after 850+ dogs who came from all across India. Rakesh works remotely from his farm over the internet to run his IT firm in Bangalore and co-ordinates remotely with his colleagues and clients. "As long as I am available over my phone and laptop, my company can run", says Rakesh. From food to medical attention for the sick ones, Rakesh spends almost 15 lakhs every month on VOSD, out of which most of it is paid from his own pocket. Despite financial challenges, Rakesh's resolve made him stand firm on his love for dogs and he never gave up.
Today VOSD is widely recognised as the world’s largest no-kill sanctuary for rescue for stray dogs.  At present there are 800+ stray animals with us including 800 dogs, 7 horses and 10 cows in Rakesh’s privately owned farm. 100% of the animals are kept unchained and in the case of cows and horses they are free grazing.

Need for quality hospital:
Existing vet expertise is based in Bangalore and dogs have to be taken on an 150km/ 8hr round trip for all diagnosis and hospitalization. VOSD has a barebones medical facility that has 2 OPD’s, a basic surgery. This local facility was built 7 yrs ago when there were 10-20 dogs and there was no plan to expand. Now they have 850+ dogs - all with medical history. Current medical system is optimised for costs, but is (1) logistics intensive (2) creates unnecessary external dependence (3) & long wait times

The proposed VOSD Resident Hospital:
A one time investment of ₹ 50 lacs will dramatically improve healthcare for 850+ animals, increase treatment capacity by upto 200% & reduce monthly costs by ₹ 2 lacs.

Ensuring Local Vet Presence:
● PRESENT: Dogs have to be driven 150km roundtrip for all diagnostics and medical procedures which is easily 5-6hrs of driving and 2-hrs of waiting/inspection time. This is highly stressful for dogs and there is an everyday dependence on vehicles, drivers etc.
● PROPOSED upgrade will ensure residential vet presence locally most of the week
● BENEFITS improves quality and speed of care and will reduce 8-10 trips a month which means will reduce 80-100hrs of driving time for dogs, drivers and handlers. The direct cost impact will b reduction by Rs 75,000-80,000
monthly in wages and fuel costs.

Diagnostics to be locally available:
● PRESENT: Currently even basic diagnostics such as blood samples are packed in ice packs and sent to Bangalore or the dog has to be transported. Sometimes this can cause wait times for upto a week because each trip is a 8hr trip with a single vial of blood. At at average 20-30 tests are carried out each month.
● PROPOSED: Blood-diagnostics will be local so tests can be run locally and immediately on any suspicion of symptoms. These will be shared with the vets in Bangalore and treatment started immediately.
● BENEFITS: By improving turn around by 2 days per test we gain a total of 60 days of faster prognosis, Rs 75-100,000 in diagnosis and transport costs per month

Your support will ensure that VOSD can provide the best quality care for these 850+ dogs and give them a chance to lead a happy life.

Dear Supporters,

We have got a tremendous response from all of you for our fundraiser. We thank you and Milaap team for the immense support you have given towards our cause.

We started the efforts for building the hospital four years back and this is our fourth attempt to raise funds through crowdfunding. Our earlier attempts had not raised a fraction of the actual cost till now. The response this time has given us faith and belief that we can achieve what we envisioned with your help. This will make it the 3 largest, best equipped and the only residential vet facility of its kind in India.

As we re-commence our efforts to build, we owe each and every donor the transparency of how their money will be spent to the last rupee. The following section outlines our budget and use of funds including quotations from vendors.

Here's the overall breakup of the costs involved in making the hospital a reality
  • Construction of hospital premises - Rs 52.97 Lakhs
  • 3 Mobile Ambulance (1 fully equipped with OT)  Vans: Rs 36 Lakhs
  • Diagonostic equipment: Rs 26 Lakhs
  • Total ~ Rs 1.15 Crores

Hospital Premises:
Initially, we had kept the goal amount as Rs 50 Lakhs (~$70,000) since our immediate need was to cater for the hospital which can provide a huge relief for our dogs and other animals. Here, is the proforma invoice (quotation) that was issue by Suryoday Enterprises for our hospital with a budget of Rs 52,97,000 which shows the breakup of construction and other details.

Here is a video of the sanctuary where the construction work has already begun including the vets facility.

Mobile Ambulance Vans
VOSD started as a rescue in 2013 and by 2015 we were one of the largest rescue organization! We were picking up, treating almost 3600 dogs a year, without even considering the option off euthanasia. This included sophisticated surgeries such as tendon reconstruction, spinal and brain trauma, etc for stray/abandoned dogs in India. And it was a service provided free. This was made possible with:

  • A fleet of vehicles including 1 Tempo van with a fully functional OT with water and power supply, 6 ambulances with a team of 2 each, 3 transport vehicles for logistics and a fully functional Trauma Center with a capacity of 100+ dogs in critical care at any time.
  • Unfortunately, the infrastructure had to be disbanded and sold off for lack of funds to continue the day-to-day operations of the sanctuary. Of this infrastructure, only the 3 transport vehicles remain in service.
We wish to restart the best rescue service in India again - with 1 Tempo Traveler Ambulance van (equipped with OT), 2 Maruti Ecco ambulance vans. The proforma invoices for these place them at Rs 19 lakhs, and Rs 16 lakh, totaling 35 lakhs.

Diagonostic equipment:
The cost of the diagnostic equipment essential for the hospital is roughly Rs 26 lakhs with an immediate requirement of Rs 8 Lakhs for the equipments mentioned below. We are awaiting the complete quotation for all equipments and shall present it in the next update.

This was our vision and goal, to reach out to the maximum number of dogs in need of support and give them the best care to our ability. Your support has been invaluable for us and we would like your continued support to give our best.

We commit to posting an update to all of you on the progess as well as the exact expenditure (to be) incurred whenever we withdraw. Please do continue your valuable support and please do share the campaign with your friends and family.

Thank you all!

Sincerely,
Rakesh Shukla

Dear Supporters,

Thank you so much for your overwhelming response and love. We are truly humbled by your generous contribution toward our cause.

The funds received will be used for expanding the hospital and to meet the daily needs of 850 dogs that we cater to. The plan is to expand and rescue as many dogs as possible. Currently, we spend about 15-20 lakhs every month on the maintenance of the shelter like food, medicines...etc. As we all know, hospital building for 850 dogs is going to cost us a huge sum of money and since most of them have medical needs, we need to get started with this process as soon as possible. This will not be possible without your support. Please continue your valuable support by helping us reach our goal.

Thank You once again.
