Approximately 36% of India’s population lives in unsanitary conditions that are “unfit for human habitation,” Which further represents at least 23.9 crore females living with miserable sanitation, no access to clean washrooms, no access to sanitary products leading to extremely poor menstrual hygiene. Let that sink in. These women who we represent in mere numbers are forced to use dirty leftover cloths instead of pads, tampons and cups on their period. 2.3 crore girls are kept from an education just because they don’t have money to afford the very basic necessity in their lives. Scraping amounts of females die every year just because no one cares about their health. Statistics show that 88% of Indian females do not buy menstrual hygiene products because they are too expensive for them. Menstrual hygiene is ignored so much in our country that at one point there was no GST applied on items like sindoor, bindis etc but a very basic thing like sanitary pads had a 12% tax on it. This shows us how bindis and sindoors are considered more important and are more bought products in the country. This is why we need to raise awareness of the numerous diseases that poor menstrual hygiene causes and the hazards of it. With this we also have to put in our very best to make sure we help the households who are in high need of money for pads. An average female needs at least 74000/- on menstrual products in her entire lifetime. A small contribution by us can save a life and save a female from tremendous pain and provide her with nothing except for a basic thing she deserves- health.
