    Menstrual Hygiene For Underprivileged Women

    from New Delhi, Delhi

Hello there!
My name is Anugrah Steve Massey. I’m from class 12-D. This is my
project for the topic ‘Menstrual Hygiene’.
I have chosen this topic because it is an issue of concern in our
country as illiteracy prevails in under developed parts of our
country where women don’t use sanitary pads but leaves instead.
Menstrual hygiene is important as it can prevent Reproductive Tract
Infections in women which in turn can nether female morbidity.
Poor menstrual hygiene results in other problems like anemia and
cervical cancer, and even impacts mental health and may cause
issues such as embarrassment, anxiety and shame. Roughly 120
million menstruating adolescents in India experience menstrual
dysfunctions, affecting their normal daily chores. Nearly 60,000
cases of cervical cancer deaths are reported every year from
India, two-third of which are due to poor menstrual hygiene.
According to a report, 70 per cent of mothers with menstruating
daughters considered menstruation as dirty and 71 per cent
adolescent girls remained unaware of menstruation till menarche. A
2014 UNICEF report pointed out that in Tamil Nadu, 79 per cent
girls and women were unaware of menstrual hygiene practices. The
percentage was 66% in Uttar Pradesh, 56% in Rajasthan and 51%
in West Bengal.
I want to buy sanitary pads for the women and girls in the remote
villages of India, and educate them with the importance of
menstrual/female hygiene and the complications, if not utilized.
Menstruation is such a taboo subject in villages that many women
are ashamed even to seek medical advice if they face any health
problems due to menstruation. Unhygienic menstrual conditions often result in women developing health problems which are further
aggravated due to their inability to seek medical help on time. Every
year in India 23 Million women drop out of school when they start
menstruating due to the lack of a sanitary which values for just Rs.
8/Piece, and this isn’t the nominal cost; pads are available at an even
slashed rate. Even though State Governments provide free sanitary
pads in Government schools, a major fraction of girls in those
remote areas don’t attend schools and a minimal proportion of them
home school. Hence NGOs need to step up in such conditions.
I want to raise a comfortably satisfactory amount which may help
the deprived women in their menses. This small step can empower
women in our society and burst the inappropriate myths regarding
menstruation which unfortunately still exist in a few parts of our
nation.
The best you can do is to donate any amount, according to your
pocket, doesn’t matter even if it’s a single rupee, it will surely benefit
in this noble cause. If you can't donate, kindly circulate this fundraiser.
THANK YOU.
