Our Story

Roma is a 49-year-old married woman residing in Imphal West district of Manipur. She has a household of 5 members. She does weaving work to make phaneks, woolen garments, etc, and has a monthly family income of roughly INR 35,000 per month. She has formed and is leading a group of 4 members who, just like her, work hard to support their families and save for their secure future.

She is aware of the fact that an increase in her and her friend's income levels will ensure greater levels of economic independence. It will give them an independent means of generating wealth and becoming self-reliant in society. This will also generate benefits, not only for her as an individual woman but also for her family and community as a whole, through collective action for development.

She and the other women in the group also run the household. A higher standard of living will ensure better governance along with a healthier and more stable future for the families and the children. She and other group members have applied for a loan of INR 400,000 from Chanura, one of Milaap's Field Partners, for the purchase of more items and raw materials necessary for making more weaving work and then on to invest the profits earned to expand their venture to meet the rising demands of the customers and have a better life for themselves.
