Here is an update on Aindrilla’s health. 

With your support Aindrilla was able to undergo the bone marrow transplant in June 2016. The family has shared their gratitude to all of you. Aindrilla was responding to the treatment, but from November she has been becoming weak. We spoke to Rintu, Aindrilla’s father. “She was making good progress after the bone marrow transplant”, said Rintu. But since November, things became critical. The donor’s cell count reduced tremendously. This has made her extremely weak over the past few months. She has become anaemic since the red blood cells counts have gone down tremendously.

Rintu and his wife have shifted to Bangalore for their child’s treatment.  Sine the counts are not improving, doctors have recommended that she should undergo another bone marrow transplant. The only ray of hope for the family is another transplant but with the increasing expenses, they are struggling for funds.

Rintu has asked your help in sharing this update with your friends or network who would be willing to support them. “I am extremely grateful for your support. When we had no way to help my daughter to undergo the  treatment, you helped us, but now I have another request  to save my daughter”, said Rintu.

Aindrila recovered from the viral fever in the first week of September after chemotherapy. Blood test were conducted once in every 2-3 weeks to check her recovery after the transplant. In the latest test, which was conducted on October 26, it was revealed that the percentage of cells produced by the transplanted bone marrow has now reduced to 45% compared to the total cells. 

Immediately after the transplant, the donor cell count was above 99%. It has gradually reduced to the current levels over the last two months. Doctors say that it is very unusual that the bone-marrow of an unrelated donor is rejected four months after the transplant.

More stem cells from the bone marrow harvest were injected today and the doctors are hopeful that the donor cells count gets better. At the same time, doctors have said that if the situation does not improve, she will need another bone marrow transplant (BMT). Aindrila’s father, Rintu says, “BMT is a painful operation. I hope that the proportion of donor cells in Aindrila goes up again after the latest injection so that my daughter does not have to go through the ordeal again. Please pray for her health.”

I am Sudhakar, a Milaap Open fellow in Bengaluru. I spoke to Aindrila’s father, Rintu, on 1st September 2016. They have rented a house near the hospital temporarily till Aindrila’s  admitted in Narayana Hrudayalaya.

The bone marrow transplant was carried out in the month of June 2016 successfully. Rintu  says, “The bone marrow donor was chosen from Datri Blood Stem Cells Donors Registry. Doctors suspect that because the donor for the Bone Marrow Transplant was not a relative, certain complications might arise.” 

Aindrila has been suffering from a viral fever and infection for the last 10 days. A chemotherapy session is currently in progress to get rid of the ECG virus, the count of which had increased because Aindrila’s immunity is poor. 

The course of the post transplant care will be decided by the doctors once she recovers from the fever and based on the blood test results then. She has been undergoing blood tests weekly. The results were positive overall before the fever hit her in August. Each blood test costs about  Rs 15,000 to Rs 20,000, and the expenses have risen further because of the fever.
