Dear Supporters,

I am Uthra Nagarajan, an Open Fellow with Milaap. I got a chance to meet two-and-a-half-year-old Madhan at his home in Maduravoyal, Chennai. He was running around, playing when I arrived. A shy kid at first, he warmed up once we started talking. Madhan is recuperating well from his surgery a couple of months ago. His mother Hemalatha was evidently happy at her son’s recovery and thanked all the supporters.

Madhan currently takes four medication a day, two of which are long term. He undergoes blood tests once in 15 days and has an endoscopy procedure scheduled for next month. “He has turned very naughty the past few weeks,” smiled Hemalatha. “He eats well and has started demanding spicy, tasty food which we cannot give him yet.” Sometimes, Madhan’s parents and grandparents eat only after he sleeps, not having the heart to refuse him the food they eat. Madhan’s diet comprises well-mashed food such as idli, idiyappam, and boiled fruits and vegetables.

He has also started playing with other children in the locality, calling them to his home. This ensures that his grandparents can keep an eye on him. “He is very particular about his medication,” chipped in his grandfather. “The moment the clock strikes 10:30 in the morning, he comes running to us for his tablets.”

Madhan’s father Yuvaraj is a mason and Hemalatha is a housewife. The couple recently had their second child Sanjay. They hope for a full recovery for Madhan, before putting him in school at the age of four years.

Today was a big day for Madhan. Finally his chest tube has been removed and the surgeon has fixed his shunt operation for 3rd week of June. The dye study showed that the hole in the food pipe has almost healed but for a very small defect which will likely heal by itself . Good news is he doesn't need an operation for that hole now. He can go for the shunt surgery and everything goes well we might be able to go home by the end of this month.

Thank you everyone for the help and prayers. Madhan has started  enjoying his hospital stay now. When his feeding pump alarm goes off indicating that it needs a refill , he tells his mother to start preparing his next milk feeds and doesn't stop saying it until she makes it .His antibiotics have also been changed to oral now  ,so his iv line will also be removed soon.

We can't wait to see him go back home and the doctors and nurses taking care of him are excited too.

Dear Supporters,

Thank you all, I can't believe there are so many nice people out there .Doctors have tied gauze like a boxing glove in Madhan's hands so he doesn't pull out his tubes. He has already done  it twice in the past. The tube which bypasses the hole in his food pipe and goes all the way to the intestine is very precious .He can't eat and is dependent on this tube for food . He can't drink water too until the hole is healed. Please pray for his recovery.
Thank you
