Dear Supporters,

Along with my wife, I was fortunate to visit Poulami and her family at her home on Tuesday, May 21st.  Her village Gopalpur is nearer to Basirhat than Haroa and barely 20 kms from the Indo-Bangladesh border.

Family: Grandfather no more. Father bed ridden with neuro problem, under medicine. Grand mother and mother hard working women - stitching work as profession. Elder sister - Pallavi in 9th standard. Poulami now in 4th standard. House: Owned by them. Pucca house (brick walled) - 1 room & toilet under Govt. scheme. Rest of the portion is kaacha (mud walled)Agricultural fields: None; Joint share on some Mango and other fruit trees. They have a milking cow.
Our Poulami: A bubbly child. Loves to swim, climb trees and a darling of the neighborhood. Smart and cute. Loves drawing the most. Likes eating various fruits than chocolate or sweets. Introduced me to her friends and her cow. The Prosthetic Hand: Working well without any issues. Thumb onward first 3 fingers movable. Poulami settled with it. Even rode bi-cycle. The Company (Endolite India Ltd.) follows up regularly and if needed will replace till she turns 18. (another 9 years). I too personally found the quality of the hand and movements to be great. Worth all our efforts.

The Future:
  • Expected Expense: Current hand will need a replacement as she turns 18. Endolite has given an estimate of Rs. 16 lakhs including the new hand, life long warranty & guaranty and related medical cost. Her mother has opened a joint account in her name. They have been able to save close to Rs. 1 lakh as of now.
  • Rehabilitation: Please let the family or me know of Govt. schemes - which helps child like Poulami and if possible name of the department to be contacted and process

    • Educational help - higher education
    • Medical cost
    • Livelihood assistance after she turns 18
Lastly, hats off to Poulami's strong willed mother & grand mother - apostle of Shakti. Battling all odds with a smile.Requesting your wishes and blessings for Poulami and her family.

Regards,
Saunak

Visiting our little Poulami in May

Namaste All,
Trust you are doing well.
Just to re-introduce myself I was the fund raiser for this campaign supported by YOU for Poulami Halder of Haroa in West Bengal, India.
Thanks to you, she is doing fine and pretty much back to her normal life - school, drawing, outdoor games, etc.
She is now used to her new hand. Though she is currently facing some itching and getting pimples in this scotching summer sometimes - in the areas where the new hand touches her skin.

I am planning to visit Poulami and her family at her home on Tuesday, May 21st. If you have any advise or guidance for her, please let me know. If needed, I can take printout of your customised message and handover to her. Any other instruction to me - feel free to pass it on. Post my visit - hopefully with some pics I will provide you an update.

Requesting your wishes and blessings.

Regards,
Saunak

A week back, Poulami’s mother called me and informed that the surgery went well. A day before the surgery – end of July, her purse was stolen in Sealdah railway station. As her mobile was lost, she was not reachable. Her new mobile no. is 9051 864 477.

Poulami is doing well and joined back school. She is going out to play too. Her photos with the new hand below. Expense breakup follows:
28th May = Rs. 1,20,000 (advance payment for the imported hand)
25th July = Rs. 1,64,890
Total expenses = Rs. 2,84,890.

In the last moment it seems Endolite gave few% discount and then with the newspaper articles there were other kind donation. Poulami’s mother said the total amount will be around Rs. 1 lakh which will be kept in a FD for the next hand. This hand will last 10 years only. At the age of 18, she will be requiring another hand that will last life time. It will cost Rs. 16 lakhs.

As per Poulami's mother - the July 26th article of Anandabazar is fabricated and had lot of facts that are not true. The reality for the family remains harsh and there was no benefits extended - they were used more as a propaganda of a political party.

Lastly, Poulami's mother being a rural woman without internet connectivity cannot thank each one of you personally. But she and her family will be ever grateful to each one of you for lifetime. She invited all of you to visit her house and meet our little Poulami. One of her sentence stuck me "I am unlucky that I do not have the means to take care of my injured daughter, but I am lucky that God came in the form of such well-wishers to help my child."

A BIG THANK U to all of you & of course Milaap. :)
