Dear Supporters,

We have a good update for you on Prabhat’s health.

Prabhat has started walking again. His doctors had not expected him to start walking this early, but he has been showing good signs of progress.

Since one of his legs is shorter than the other, he has to undergo a regenerative correctionve surgery in a few months. Post that, Prabhat is expected to regain complete movement in both his legs.

He is not fit enough to go to school, but Anne Viegas, his teacher and champion, informs us that he is keeping himself engaged. His friends come to visit him and play games with him at home. He reads books and tries to keep up with his studies. His family and friends are more than happy to supply him with new reading material every week.

It is worth noteing that it was Viegas’ involvement in her students’ lives that alerted her to Prabhat’s condition, allowing her to seek immediate help for him.

She sheds some light on the importance of teachers paying attention to their students’ lives beyond the classroom thus, “As a Teach For India (TFI) Fellow, most of my students come from low -income backgrounds. Their parents are generally occupied all day with hard labour work to keep track of every aspect of their children’s lives. In Prabhat’s case, his parents were attentive, but this may not always be the case. Hence, it is important for teachers to keep an eye out for his/her students’ well-being beyond academics.”

It was Viegas and her co-teacher who sought help for Prabhat from the hospital. It would have taken him longer to recover without their help.

Viegas and Prabhat’s family have thanked you for your support.

Thank you.

Today Prabhat celebrated his birthday at home. He was taken home a week back and he was really happy that he could be back home with his family in time for his birthday.
While he will take a while to walk, he has made really good progress! The grafting surgery was done successfully and his right leg has healed well. The left leg still needs a little more time to recover.
Prabhat and his full family are eternally grateful to all of you for your donations and your prayers. His mother says that she gave him his first life, but all of you have given him a second life.
