Dear All

Thank you for all the support and contribution to our ABC ARV program.

We have successfully completed 1202 dogs in Dindigul Town and vaccinated more than 3000 dogs there. In Kodaikanal, we managed to finish our 1000 dogs number and vaccinated more than 4000 dogs across town and the entire hills. The program has been successful so far and we are happy to say that Kodaikanal has been rabies-free for three years now and we hope with all your support we remain the same and slowly Dindigul district becomes a rabies-free zone in the WHO map.

KSPCA ABC ARV report for dindigul from August to December 2019Kodaikanal society for protection and care for animals ( KSPCA) after receiving the work order from Dindigul municipal corporation started the repair and renovating of the facility as per the ABC rules and regulations . The work order stated to do the ABC ARV program in dindigul for 1200 dogs at Rs700 / dog .
Although the facility was to a certain extent completed and  due to a series of dog bite cases in Dindigul town , KSPCA in collaboration with Humane society International (HSI) India started the ABC/ ARV program in Dindigul on 12th August 2019 and paused on December 6 th 2019 due to poor weather conditions , health issue of dogs ( Canine distemper , low platelet count and parvo virus ) and also rto complete the repair work in the facility.
In the meantime KSPCA - HSI team have requested requested the colony care takers , animal lovers and feeders to ensure giving vitamin supplements and also 7 in 1 vaccine to avoid and prevent spread of CD (canine distemper ) as when catching in same area , the dogs are kept in groups in single kennel and CD can be contagious and we would like to avoid that and keep strict quarantine in the ABC facility .
Although the human population is more than 2 lakh in dindigul , we noticed a large number of people who fear dogs , some who wouldn’t want them around in the locality - our local coordinator ensured by guaranteeing people about the ABC ARV program , giving them awareness on rabies , responsible pet ownership and much more , in all this what gave us hope are the large number of people  who love animals and feed dogs too in their areas and we approached them to join us and help reach the community about our progarm. We felt sensitising the community in the right way is the key to success for the Dindigul town to be rabies free .
Our Goal and approach :
This rapid population growth has put pressure on municipal infrastructure, affecting traffic and sanitary facilities, including the management of food waste, which has contributed to the growth of the street dog population. The overabundance of street dogs has resulted in an increasingly competitive environment for these animals, which in turn leads to abandoned puppies, underfed adult dogs, conflict between dogs, and sometimes aggression towards humans. Addressing dog overpopulation in a humane way and adopting the goal of hundred per cent rabies vaccination coverage, hand in hand with a plan for managing garbage and reducing street litter, will result in a safer, healthier environment for all. Dindigul, by implementing these projects, will become a model of a caring, humane and well-managed community.
Culling of dogs, which has been the cruel strategy commonly adopted in urban India, results in aggressive, unhealthy, unvaccinated dogs moving into the area and this, together with rapid replacement to fill the ‘vacuum’ left by culling, means that before very long dog overpopulation is again a problem. It has been well documented (http://www.livescience.com/39842-the-case-for-india-street-dogs.html) that the most humane approach to dog welfare in urban areas is to spay/neuter and vaccinate dogs so that there is a healthy, stable, controlled population of street dogs. Animal Birth Control/Anti Rabies Vaccination (ABC/ARV) is the program followed by progressive governments and animal welfare organizations everywhere in the world now.
To this end, KSPCA - HSI India has been working with Dindigul Municipal corporation to carry out a comprehensive project to do a female centric approach of doing animal birth control and anti rabies vaccination to dindigul street/community owned dogs and accomplish 100 percent rabies vaccination coverage to already sterilised dogs and unsterilised males.

Our Project :
Kspca have so far from 12 August 2019 - 6 December 2019 have done a total of 475 dogs out of which 439 were female dogs and 36 Male dogs.
We also did a total of 372 dogs field vaccinations ( ARV- Anti rabies vaccination ) for already sterilised dogs and unsterilised males.
Month wise -
August 2019  - ABC / ARV - 86  ( 6 M 80 F) dogs

September 2019 - ABC / ARV -  141 ( 22 M 119 F ) dogs
Field vaccinations- ARV only - 111 dogs

Field vaccinations- ARV only -  143 dogs
November 2019 - ABC / ARV - 81 ( 1 M 80 F ) dogs
Field vaccinations- ARV only -  43 dogs
December 2019 - ABC / ARV - 40 ( 4 M 36 F ) dod

A grand total of 475 dogs  ABC ARV done and 372 field vaccinations only .

Details  :
The team catches dogs in a professional and humane manner using a GPS app. Using this app, a digital file is created which includes the location where the dog is picked up,its tag number, sex, colour, method of catching, etc. A collar is put on the dog with its tag number before being put into the catching vehicle. Dogs are brought to the facility in the catching vehicle and the following day, after 8-12 hours of fasting, Animal Birth Control surgery is performed. Anesthetic, antibiotics and all necessary medicines are carefully administered as per the dog’s weight, and each dog is injected with Ivermectin to deal with any parasitic infestations. And later given the ARV ( anti rabies vaccination ). Dogs  are kept in the facility for three days post surgery, during which time they will be well fed. Finally, after a last health check by the vet in charge, they are returned to the exact location from which they are picked up, using the GPS app. All dogs treated in this manner are permanently identifiable by a v-shaped notch on the tip of the ear, done at the time of surgery.
