Together We Are Stronger

As with most of us, I was feeling helpless and hopeless about life and the situation that was unfolding in front of us. Working from home (Guwahati, a city in the north-eastern region of India) became a way of life for me and restriction of mobility was a reason for my restlessness while Assam was battling a bigger problem that is often called The Annual Floods of Assam (unfortunate but true). The floods were sweeping people, wildlife, livelihood and this time it was worse than any of the previous flood situations in Assam. Like most people from Assam, I have witnessed floods. And this was no different and probably worse! I was frustrated and desperate to do something, and without putting a lot of thought; I decided to support the affected people by raising funds and doing what I could in my capacity. That’s when I thought I could take help from Milaap, a crowdfunding website to raise funds and take the necessary steps. I registered a campaign in Milaap and as I was registering a campaign, Guwahati was witnessing a massive flash flood. I registered, but that was just one part of the story, I had to figure out a way the fund was going to be utilised and in that process identify a non governmental organisation(NGO) who could help me reach out to the affected people. I did manage to get in touch with an organisation based out of Jorhat, a city in the upper bank of Brahmaputra. I was to a large extent very relieved to speak to the organisation head who was happy to help me reach out to the affected people. We thereon decided to reach out to affected children but there was something we didn’t consider and that is the mode of transport of the relief from Guwahati to Jorhat. The global pandemic was or as you read is still roaring in India and so is it in Assam, the guidelines in the state for inter-district mobility is very strong, so, to arrange for transportation was getting challenging and hence to our dismay had to discontinue the association. To be honest, I was in panic and you have no idea how much!! But the universe sent me help and I managed to speak to someone who put me in touch with this noble non - governmental organisation named “We for You” based out of Biswanath district of Assam, which is around 270 kilometers from Guwahati. I was initially apprehensive because of the transportation part as it would still be inter-district transport but the kind people from the organisation decided to help me in transportation and I was elated like a small baby. There was just a slight change. Now instead of children we are reaching out to flood affected families of Gohpur in Biswanath district of Assam. Gohpur is a small town which is hugely affected by floods, and this time around 35,659 people are affected by it.
Meanwhile, to my surprise, the campaign was receiving a lot of love and support and we as a community managed to raise Rs.40,000 in a week to the campaign. This was beyond my expectation and made me realise that there is a community who is there for us! I knew I wanted to reach out to more affected people, but I also knew I needed support for us as a community to reach out to more affected people. That’s when my dearest friend Shyamant Raj Hazarika came to my rescue. A fashion designer by profession, an amazing combination of creativity and compassion, we discussed the campaign, the challenges we were faced with and also the way we wanted to take this campaign forward. Considering the flood situation, he suggested we increase the amount from Rs.40,000 to Rs.75,000 considering the support we were getting. I was apprehensive as always, but I decided to listen to him. Both I and Shyamant got our energy to share this with our folks around the world without expecting a lot. By increasing the amount, we were hoping to reach out to around 200 affected families. And to our surprise, the response left us only with gratitude and love.Finally on the 8th of August 2020, I received a mail in my mail box from Milaap saying we successfully reached the goal amount of Rs.75,000 and also exceeded it by Rs.2000 more. We were ecstatic and just wanted to celebrate this moment, but we were also aware of the responsibility that we had. With this massive support from our folks around the world, we were one step closer to our dream of reaching out to 200 affected families, so our responsibility was all the more serious. Meanwhile, we started collecting all the relief products that was going into the kit, after a series of discussions between the ngo partner, Shyamant and I decided to give flattened rice, chickpeas, soap, sanitary napkins, mosquito nets, masks, 1kg Rice to each family, soybeans and mosquito killer. We decided on this after careful consideration of the requirements of the families we were reaching out to.

By the second week of August, I with a lot of constant help from my folks at home started packing all the relief into cartons and meanwhile our NGO partner was arranging for the travel to collect the relief products from my house. Finally, we got done with the packing and towards the start of the second week the kind volunteers from the organisation came to collect the relief products.They took all the relief products to Biswanath district.

Once they reached their office in Bishwanath district, the kind people at the organisation carefully packaged all the relief products (9 products in one kit) into 200 kits for the 200 families we collectively intended to reach out to. Finally, on the 19th August 2020, the 200 families received the relief kits.

If I reflect back on the entire experience, it was a thorough learning experience. When I started, I had no idea about the logistics and the operations of fundraising and campaign, but now I think I have a little bit of an idea of how it works.
Finally, all this would not have been possible without the super generous support You and We For You had shown towards this cause. With this support, I know that in spite of all the unfortunate things happening around us, we as a community can fight this together, support each other and make this a better place to live in.

I am super excited to share with you that we have started getting the relief kit together. Keeping in mind women's hygiene and the lack of essential items for affected people, we have put together a kit that would include the following items :
- Flattened rice
- Soap
- Local Gram
- Single person thin comforter
- Sanitary napkins
- Masks
