Hi,

First of all thank you everyone for your continued support.

During this Daan Utsav week, just wanted to reach out and update everyone regarding our ongoing activities. Recently we have also started new early education centres in remote areas of Murshidabad.

Backed by your support, in Sundarban, we started our own agro project to provide nutrition for the kids of the area, where malnutrition is a major problem. The local people have been severely affected in the aftermath of cyclone Amphan and Yaas, coupled with the onslaught of the covid pandemic. In these remote areas, the women and kids are most vulnerable to the after effects of such calamities. Our initiative of this agro project is driven solely by the women farmers of Sundarban, creating some means of livelihood for these marginal women.

Sundarban is no stranger to cyclones, but we are doing our bit to plant more trees in the areas and distributing saplings to local people. Supported by corporates, we planted close to 10,000 fruit bearing trees to restore and refurbish the green lost in the cyclone, this year. This will also contribute to reforestation efforts, restoring lost greenery, repairing damaged ecosystems and mitigating climate change issues.

Kishalay Foundation still in its early days, have close to 1000 kids under in its wings in the early education centres in Sundarban and Murshidabad. We have generated rural employment to the tune of close to 70 teachers, where more than 80% are female teachers. But this does not work in auto pilot mode. We are heavily dependent on contributors to make sure we keep functioning the same way and provide equal opportunity to every kid.

During this Daan Utsav week, we request every one to be part of it, any which way you choose to. A sense of fulfilment and lots of happiness hormones in store, when you see these deprived kids get the same opportunities that we take for granted.

Thank you again!

Dear Supporters,

Thank you for your support

Nature unleashes its fury on Sundarban once again. And this time it's not just the coastal areas, but the severe flooding over the last few weeks has made significant damages to livelihood in the interiors of Sundarban, that remained somewhat unscathed during the ravages of cyclone Amphan and Yaas.

Since Kishalay Foundation has workers at the grass root level in Sundarban, who work at our early education centers, we are able to get first hand account of the extent of damages, fairly quickly. On this occasion, owing to the flooded farm fields, paddy farming apparently is no longer possible this season, in most areas. Similar damages have been caused to areas of other vegetations.

Kishalay foundation have been regularly implementing plantation drives, in different regions of Sundarban. Significant damages have been caused in the plantations that were done recently. Making these newly planted trees which are yet to have firm roots, survive, is a challenge as well.

Kishalay foundation will provide support to the families that are most deeply affected by this recent flooding. Particularly focusing on women and children who are most deeply affected after such natural calamity. And as always, it would be great to have you by our side, cause we cannot imagine doing this alone.

Thanks again for all the support you provided.

Hi,

Our relief efforts continued this week with our volunteers addressing short to mid term relief of the affected community. These included the following:

1. Providing targeted relief efforts for the needy families who are yet to recuperate from the devastation of the cyclone. We also provided fodder for the cattle, to the owners. Cattle are important part of rural livelihood, and looking from a mid to long term rehabilitation point of view, it was important to support them both from a humane as well as economic point of view. This was in done Kamardanga and Ramgopalpur in Basanti block, Sundarban.

2. We are undertaking pond revival programmes which are contaminated with saline water during the cyclone. These ponds are integral part of rural lifestyle, and it was important that these are revived as soon as possible as the villagers are hugely dependant on it. These activity was carried out in a few ponds in Ranigarh, in Gosaba, Sundarban.

3. One of the immediate aftermath of such a natural calamity is health and sanitation issue, particularly affecting the women and children. Our female volunteers continued to address such sanitation issues with local women, including the need for maintaining proper menstrual hygiene. This week, it was carried out in Satjelia region of Sundarban. Environment friendly, bio-degradable sanitary pads were provided in this camp.

 4. Last year, we had started our new primary education centre in one of the tribal region of Murshidabad. During this second wave of Covid, we are conducting health and malnutrition prevention camp in this centre of Kishalay in Kandi Block of Murshidabad. This includes providing nutritional food for the kids of our education centre.
