Sumitra Kamble, 45, is a woman who exemplifies hard-work and determination. I met her during my field visit to Diggewadi. She coordinates all the activities of the SHG, including, gathering members for SHG meetings and ensuring timely repayment of money. Sumitra works as a daily wage laborer from 9 am to 2 pm, earning an income of Rs. 60 per day. She simultaneously runs her cattle rearing business, utilizing the little time that is left for the day. She recently availed a loan of Rs. 20000 to buy a buffalo, and expanded her cattle rearing business. She perfectly manages her time between her full time work, cattle rearing and household work. The buffalo provides 1 kg of milk per day. She sells the milk in the local diary at Rs. 25-30 per kg, variable on the fat content. This earns her close to Rs. 1000 per month. This additional income allows her to help the family meet the expenses. Sumitra's husband also works as a laborer in the farms and earns a daily wage. Sumitra is very happy that she took this step. She says that it is only a start and wishes to expand her business further. This micro-loan has helped Sumitra establish herself and gave the family the much needed push towards financial security.
