Selina and her mother
Selina and her mother

Walking to Selina’s place, we could hear ‘Student of the Year’ songs blasting from a distance. Got me wondering if this die-hard fan was was our next borrower. Seeing us, her mother yelled to lower the volume and asked her to come out to meet us. Her face was dripping with sweat. She shyly smiled at me and wondered who I was. Those pretty eyes and that dimpled smile; she definitely had it all to be Bollywood’s next face, I told Selina. She turned around and gave her mother the ‘I told you so’ look and in return, her mother gave me the ‘do not encourage’ eyes.

So here I was talking to Selina, a complete dance addict. She cannot wait for the upcoming weddings and annual functions every year. Any chance to perform, she is ever ready. Bollywood songs get her feet tapping and a 3 minute dance routine turns out to be hours of dancing till she nails the exact same moves as in the video. Known to be a choreographer in all family weddings, Selina wants to become an actress. From the look of it, this dream does not look like a teenage dream that might fade away over time. Her mother told us how coming from a family like hers, turning Selina’s dream into a reality is next to impossible. She explained how she plans to marry her the day she finishes her degree. It was not fair but they had managed to ingrain the reality into Selina.

Talking about the Milaap loan, Selina told me she loved English. She took much pride in telling me how she scored 90 in English with absolutely no help. The loan of Rs.15000 was used to enroll her for other subjects. Class 11 studies form the base of most of the concepts for Class 12. To clear the boards, she had to have a good grasp on the concepts early on. Private tuitions helped her achieve the same. Having scored a first class division in 11th, Selina is confident of clearing the boards with good grades. Ask her about her first love, she gives her best smile, a sly wink and whispers, ‘I will figure it out.’ Such was her confidence. Headstrong. Devoid of the said reality.
