Rojalin Biswal runs a small business of selling namkeen mixtures from her home. When we reached her home, she was busy in the kitchen with her daily preparations. As we sat down to talk, a few customers walked in to buy packets of peanut and corn flakes mixture. Rojalin’s husband works at the forest department. Since it was an off day for him, he helped Rojalin with the preparations.

Rojalin also has two sewing machines kept in the hall across the kitchen. When she is not working on preparing the mixtures, Rojalin spends time stitching for people in the neighbourhood. A talented woman, she works very hard to subsist.

She has two children, a young school going son and a college going daughter. She aims at providing good education to both her children. Her son, Sowmya, studies in Class 9 at present. Her daughter is pursuing a Masters Degree in Political Science and hopes to be a lecturer. Due to deep financial difficulties, she took an education loan for Sowmya. He is a bright kid and the money helped in paying for his school’s admission fees and tuition fees.

While talking about Sowmya, Rojalin’s voice chokes and tears brim in her eyes. She hesitantly adds that he suffered from a cancerous tumor in his throat, 10 years ago. They took an enormous loan and got him treated at the best hospitals in the country. All their savings dried up in treating their son. The gloom of those past years still haunts Rojalin. But she has put up a strong exterior and goes about her work dedicatedly.

Sowmya’s health is better and the family is raising him with all affection and best resources. Rojalin is glad for the loan in supporting his education.
