The Constitution of India was amended in 2002 to make education a fundamental right of every child. The efforts to universalize elementary education by community ownership of the school system by Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan has helped the community in Bangiwadi, Karnataka says the young & spirited Ambika. After being enrolled in school and passing with distinction, young Ambika wanted to pursue Bachelors in Social work. With her father passing away and low income generating means to run household led her brother Gautam to look for job opportunities in Bangalore. Gautam got a preferable job at a BPO which he later left due to language issues. With a warm house to shelter themselves Ambika for a year pursued nothing but followed her mother’s footsteps of being a homemaker and doing household chores. Ambika’s mother Lagamava was determined to make her daughter study further. She soon found out about micro-financing and learned from Rekha, a co-worker of MASS lives in the nearby town named Sankeswara. Lagamava went to inquire and soon got a loan for educating her daughter to the best. Ambika has a very shy nature and always keeps smiling and talks about how hard life has been for all the family members. Ambika currently is applying to various schools for teaching and also teaches in the Anganwadi Schools every evening to keep her dreams alive. Ambika soon will join an English speaking course so as to learn and improve her English speaking skills.
