1-Month-Old Yashasvini Needs PICU Stay To Survive Rare Disorder

Amit and Poornima’s happiness knew no bounds when they had Yashasvini. A new chapter was starting their lives. Being new parents, it gave them great joy to plan things for their daughter - which colour the room should be, what toys to buy, the dos and the don’ts of childcare. But, within just a few weeks, everything changed. They are now desperately waiting outside the ICU, praying for their only daughter’s survival.

Her lungs were filled with fluid and she needed immediate surgery

“She suffered from cold and cough so we took her to the hospital and religiously gave her medicines. Although the cold was gone, we could hear her breathing heavily at night. It scared us so much that we took her to the hospital again. When further tests were done, we were told her condition was critical and to immediately take our child to a bigger hospital. Before we could understand anything, we moved to Hyderabad in an ambulance. Everything was happening so quickly.” - Amit, father

As soon as they reached the hospital, little Yashasvini was admitted to the ICU. Her lungs were filled with fluid and she needed immediate surgery.

She needs continued PICU to survive

After emergency surgery to relieve the pressure on her lungs, she was diagnosed with Chylothorax, a rare condition in which lymphatic fluid leaks into the space between the lung and chest wall. When this fluid builds up in the lungs, it can cause a severe cough, chest pain and difficulty breathing. Chylothorax is a lymphatic flow disorder.

“We don’t understand such big medical terms. All we know is that our child is in the ICU fighting for her life and that she needs to stay there to survive this disorder. She needs the ventilator to breathe and the medication to get better, but we are unable to provide her with that. We are failing to save her.” - Poornima, mother
