“I believe in past sins and that it can affect your present life. I don’t know what grave injustice I must have done in my past life to have my 2-year-old girl suffer so much. Not a day goes by when she is not suffering. Not a day goes by when she is not crying in her mother’s arm, complaining of pain and demanding us to take her home. How to tell a 2-year-old that she has cancer and taking her home would mean losing her? She is our life. If anything happens to her, I don’t know if my wife and I would be able to handle the loss,” - Sunil, father

Hospital visits are eating up Sonakshi's childhood

Sonakshi Pandhare was diagnosed with renal cancer a month back. The parents, living in a small rented space in Wardha district of Maharashtra. They thought it was just a normal case of stomach bloating when the symptoms began to appear. After waiting for a few days, when Sonakshi began to show discomfort and appeared in massive pain, the parents rushed her to a local hospital.

“Doctors conducted all the tests and told us she has renal cancer and needs to undergo surgery immediately. We didn’t even know what it meant at that time. The doctor explained us everything and we left the room to check on my daughter, my wife and I broke down. We are not very educated, but we know how dangerous cancer is. We just couldn’t lose the light of our life to this dreadful disease. The doctor told us to immediately take her to a bigger and better hospital and start her treatment, and we did so without thinking of any cost but now, we are forced to think,” Sonu, mother

They need funds to save their daughter

Sonakshi’s father is the sole earning member in the family of five. The couple has three children with Sonakshi being the youngest of them.

“I work as a daily wager and make anything between Rs.100-200 on best days. The lockdown took away most of my opportunities and for the longest time we were dependent on loans from friends and family to survive,” Sunil, father

The family has so far spent Rs 20,000 on Sonakshi’s treatment. They have now exhausted all their savings. They also have no one to ask for any money, especially when the amount is as big as Rs. 8 lakh. While the doctors have performed surgery on Sonakshi and removed her left kidney to stop the spread of cancerous cells, the child still needs to be in hospital for further care which includes chemotherapy and other medications.

“From where do we get this much money from? My husband and I curse ourselves everyday for not being able to look after our child financially when she needs us the most. We have no one left to support us. We have sleepless nights thinking about how we will pay the hospital and get our child back home,” Sonu, mother
