6-Year-Old Yearns To Go To School And Live A Normal Life, But Blood Cancer Is Standing In Her Way

It breaks my heart to watch her cowering away from the doctors and nurses that approach her. She’s afraid of needles, and hates that they remind her of the pain she has to endure during her chemotherapy. She has good grasping power and is very strong. She understands that she’s sick and needs treatment. I have no doubt that she will beat cancer and come back home with us, safe and healthy.” - Poonam, mother

Thinking of it as a mere fever, they were left shocked by her cancer diagnosis

6-year-old Shree has always been a talkative bubbly little girl. Her feet were never at rest, and she would be chattering away as her parents guffawed at her little antics. But that was a little less than a month ago. Now, the smiles and giggles are a rare sight, and Shree’s conversations have been limited to her expressing her discomfort and annoyance at the frequent hospital visits.

She had a high fever and the medicines and when the medicines she was prescribed didn’t work, we took her to another doctor. He recommended getting some tests done, and although I knew I would find out what was causing her fever, I didn’t think it would be this…. I didn’t expect to find out that my daughter is suffering from blood cancer.” - Nilesh, father

She needs prolonged treatment to recover

Shree was diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL), a rare form of cancer of the blood and bone marrow affecting white blood cells. ALL progresses rapidly and is the most common type of cancer in children. With proper treatment it is possible for a person to make a full recovery and lead a normal life.

“We were just so thankful that we didn't neglect her fever and consulted a doctor, when we did. I don’t even want to think about what could have happened if we had never found out… Doctors are hopeful that with treatment, she will be able to beat cancer. Right now, we can see just how much this disease has taken a toll on her and weakened her. It's terrifying to me because I cannot imagine my life without my little girl.” - Poonam

His daughter’s treatment expenses are beyond his means

Shree needs to undergo chemotherapy to kill the cancer cells, followed by supportive treatment for a period of 2 years. Her chances of recovery are high, as long as her treatment isn’t delayed. But after spending over INR 56,000 on 2 cycles of her chemotherapy, her parents have nothing left.

Nilesh works as a small private company employee and is the only breadwinner. All these years his family has been dependent on his small income to get by. Although it is barely enough, it has been sufficient to meet their daily needs. But now, he is in a difficult predicament considering his daughter’s expensive cancer treatment, and his depleting finances.

“I put all my savings and everything I had into my daughter’s treatment. Somehow, we’ve managed to get her chemotherapy started, but now we are struggling to keep it going. We can’t afford to stop or delay her treatment, or we could lose her. I’m in a tight spot, with no one to turn to in my time of need. So I can only ask you to help me now…” - Nilesh

Shree had been looking forward to starting school. Unfortunately her diagnosis put a stop to those plans, but it's the only thing she longs for. Your contributions will aid this little girl in her fight against cancer and she can go back to living her old life. Click here to donate.
