Abandoned By Their Own Families, These Elderly Parents Found A Home At Ramlal Ashram

After A Lifetime Of Raising Children, They Were Left To Survive Alone
76-year-old Asha never imagined she would spend her final years in an old age home. She says her husband, son, and daughter-in-law abused her, denied her food, and repeatedly asked her to leave. After losing both her parents, she was left completely alone.
Today, she calls Ramlal Ashram "heaven." Asha is not alone.
  • Some residents were abandoned by their children.
  • Some lost their spouses and had nobody left to care for them.
  • Some were rescued from roadsides and railway stations.
  • Some arrived hungry, sick, and completely alone.
For hundreds of elderly people, Ramlal Ashram became the place where they found safety, dignity, and a family once again.

One Elderly Man's Suicide Sparked A Mission That Has Saved Thousands
The story of Ramlal Ashram began with a tragedy. In 2004, founder Biri Lal Ji met an elderly man crying at a railway station. The man told him that his three children had abandoned him and he had nowhere left to go. Biri Lal Ji offered to take him home and care for him.
But before he could return with a train ticket, the elderly man jumped in front of a train and lost his life. That heartbreaking moment led to the creation of Ramlal Ashram, a place where no elderly parent would be left without support.

For Many Residents, Ramlal Ashram Was The Difference Between Life And Death
When founder Biri Lal Ji passed away, his son Shiv Prasad Sharma left his corporate career to continue his father's mission. Since then, he has dedicated his life to caring for elderly people who have nowhere else to go.
Today, the ashram is home to nearly 370 elderly residents.
  • More than 4,000 elderly parents have been reunited with their families.
  • Many residents are bedridden, blind, or physically disabled.
  • Some require diapers and round-the-clock care.
  • Others were rescued from streets while battling illness, hunger, and neglect.
For many of them, arriving at Ramlal Ashram was the difference between survival and despair.

Caring For 370 Elderly Parents Takes More Than Compassion
Every day, the ashram provides:
  • Three meals and daily essentials
  • Medicines and medical treatment
  • Nursing support and caregiving
  • Shelter, clothing, and bedding
  • Rescue and rehabilitation services
But caring for hundreds of elderly residents comes at a significant cost.

The ashram does not receive government grants and relies largely on donations to continue its work. During the Covid pandemic, when donations dropped sharply, Shiv Prasad Sharma even sold his own property to ensure that the elderly residents continued receiving food and care.

Today, the financial challenges continue to grow as more elderly people arrive seeking help.
