Deadly Blood Disorder Can Cut This 3-Year-Old’s Life Short If He Does Not Get An Urgent Transplant

“Whenever friends and relatives visit us at our humble home, they are immediately taken by Ibrahim as he is a sweet and playful child. But the painful truth is his time is running out and we could lose him.” - Salma Khan, mother.

3-year-old Ibrahim looks like any other normal and healthy child. His pleasant face and innocent smiles will never give away the fact that he is ill. He suffers from a rare blood disorder called thalassemia major, where the body produces less-than-adequate amounts of hemoglobin, an oxygen-carrying protein in the blood.

Ibrahim, blissfully unaware of his condition and the threat that it poses to his life, simply lives in the moment. He does not question his parents when they refuse to put him in a nursery or mingle too much with other kids as his health is compromised.

Without a transplant, this child may not live for long

Ibrahim was diagnosed when he was just 6 months old. He had recurrent fevers and subsequent weakness, which prompted his parents to take him to multiple doctors. They had diagnosed him after a round of blood tests, and since then, he has been on regular blood transfusions. If he does not undergo blood transfusions every 21 days, he becomes extremely weak and remains in bed.

“Doctors have told us that these blood transfusions are not a permanent solution for his disease. He needs a cure – which is an urgent bone marrow transplant, soon. Or else his life span may be shortened, his vital organs may get damaged, and he may face other complications too.” - Shabir Khan, father.

Poverty stands in the way of his life-saving treatment

Ibrahim is the youngest of Salma and Shabir’s three children. Shabir is the only breadwinner of the family and makes a living by working in a flower shop. On his meagre earnings, the family is only able to scrape by each day. In this situation, he is not able to afford his son’s urgent bone marrow transplant and is appealing for help from kind strangers.

“I am having to borrow to get him his blood transfusions. How will I afford a procedure that costs lakhs and lakhs of rupees? Please help me. I am desperate to save him. My innocent child does not deserve this.” - Shabir Khan.
