Himanshu's life took a dramatic turn at the tender age of 14 when his father met with a tragic accident. With no easy access to transportation or funds for medical care, Himanshu and his mother endured a harrowing ordeal as they desperately sought help for his father. Tragically, his father slipped into a COMA.This experience not only shattered their lives but ignited a fire within Himanshu to prevent others from facing similar hardships.
“We reached the hospital by literally begging the auto driver on the street, trying to save my father. But by the time we reached, he lost so much blood he went into COMA. This incident didn’t just take my father’s 2 years, it also took my childhood, education and my family’s mental peace. I worked two jobs just to put food on the table, afford the medical bills and educate my little sister.”- Himanshu
An ambulance as their wedding gift
When Himanshu got married to his wife Twinkle in 2002, the couple received an ambulance as a gift from their parents. It was a strange request, Twinkle admits, but Himanshu’s tale of almost having lost his father was the motivation to make a difference in the lives of others.“When I refused my in-laws dowry, they insisted that they wanted to gift something and I instantly asked for an ambulance as a donation. - Himanshu
In the beginning of his mission, Himanshu saw a person who got injured in a road accident
I saw a person's leg amputated in an accident on my way home. Despite a large crowd, no one was helping him. Shocked, I quickly put him on a stretcher and took him to the hospital. His wife came and fell on her knees, thanking me for saving her husband’s life. - Himanshu
After getting married, Himanshu quickly took action, placing posters with his contact details at nearby government hospitals and dispensaries. To buy more ambulances he needed to either be a doctor, hospital or have an NGO. Thus in 2002, he founded his NGO, Shaheed Bhagat Singh Help And Care Society to provide 24/7 free ambulance services to those who need him.
Today, he receives calls from locations as far as 300 km away.
Himanshu's wife was given just 2 months to live
Life was well but in 2008, Twinkle was diagnosed with hepatitis B and the doctors declared that she just had 2 months to live. Despite the medical prognosis, Twinkle miraculously got better with no sign of the ailment. She strongly believed that it was the prayers of all the people her husband served that gave her a new life.
"She asked me to teach her how to drive an ambulance and I did it happily. But In 2020 she got diagnosed with cancer and amidst her aggressive treatment, with no strength to even fetch water for herself, she found strength within her to drive and save people. She is a true inspiration for our family."- Himanshu
"She was heading home, carrying our 6-month-old daughter along. When she noticed a group of people rushing towards her, carrying an unconscious boy who had lost a leg and was bleeding heavily. She immediately brought the child to the hospital. The boy lost his leg, but the doctor who treated him said anymore delay would have caused him to die" - Himansh
They sold their only house to save lives
"During COVID-19, people were scared to be with their loved ones who passed away. They use to request us to do their final rights. We often got calls for oxygen as their was such a huge scarcity. So we sold our house to fulfil all the incoming needs. We believed that we can build a home again but we can't bring back the lost lived." - Himanshu
Even Amitabh Bachchan appreciated them for their service and even had an NDTV live with him
So far they have helped over 80,000 people in need.
They need your support to sustain their mission, as they are currently facing a major challenge
Himanshu and Twinkle sell insurance for a living and whatever they earn goes into running this social service. They have to pay back loans, salaries to the drivers, their food and stay when on outstation call, for petrol and maintenance of the ambulances. The couple borrows money and takes advances, but still falls behind to manage the funds.Himanshu says that he has three blockages in his heart’s arteries, for which he needs urgent treatment. They have two daughters, one is in 12th grade and the other in 4th. Both the girls have grown up watching the service and helping others comes naturally to them.
Our children suffer because we are unable to even pay their school fees. Schools often don’t allow them to sit in their exams also. - Himanshu
On some days we receive more than 15-20 calls in a day. We handle cases like building fires, burned patients, and railway accidents where people lose their limbs. On some instances we have also helped in cases where the victim is stabbed and we have to carefully bring them to the hospital - Himanshu
With the funds raised, they wish to manage the monthly expenditure as well as expand their reach to as many cities as possible. The Ambulance couple also needs your help to buy 5 more ambulances. But it's hard to raise funds with the growing expenses and new cases everyday. Please support them in their mission.
