    Yathish

    from Mangaluru, Karnataka

When the sole breadwinner of the family goes bed ridden:

It was the 5th of July 2013 when a dear brother was involved in an accident that resulted in life changing injuries. Yathish, my cousin brother, went through horrifying trauma on Mary Hill Mangalore. He was making a journey on his friend’s bike which skid along the road and collided with the concrete road divider. Yathish was rushed to the hospital to stabilize his condition where he had sustained a major spinal cord injury with C4-C5 dislocation.

This 24 year young man has had a difficult start in life. A year prior he has lost his father to heart attack who was working as a taxi driver and was the main breadwinner in for the family. His mother who is the heart and soul of the family is managing to keep spirits high. Yathish’s younger brother is pursuing his basic education and hoping to become a medic with a dream to help people who have had similar life changing experiences. As you may aware this type of injury doesn’t only affect one person, it has a profound effect on his immediate family and friends too.

With no father, responsibilities usually fall on the eldest son, Yathish. But in the present situation the burden of support and care has fell on relatives including paying for the expense of Yathish’s medical necessities. As you might expect medical care can be expensive for the average family in India. To fund this, his family had to take very difficult decisions. They have sold their only family property in the hope that, the amount gained will be enough for the treatment of Yathish, but it was not the case.

Yathish has shown greatest strength throughout his recovery. Doctors had initially told the immediate family to fulfill his final wishes as the likelihood of him pulling through a coma were minimal. Watching his willpower and confidence to triumph over even the most impossible of circumstances has been amazing to see and experience. The speed of his recovery has also been much to the doctor’s surprise.

Initially, Yathish was admitted to the AJ Shetty hospital Mangalore and was in ICU for four weeks where his survival chances were minimal. Total expenditure at AJ hospital for the duration of five months i.e. from 05-07-2013 to 05-12-2013 was sixteen and half lakhs rupees including the four and half lakhs of ICU charges. Then the treatment was carried out at Kerala for one year, where he was undergoing physiotherapy treatment. Expenditure that was incurred for this was 3 and half lakhs rupees.

After being discharged from hospital, with no money for a medical set up it was inevitable there would be secondary complications. Yatish developed a severe bed sore. The extent of this was to the bone. Without medical attention bed sores can be fatal due to the risk of infection. He was subsequently admitted at the Global Hospital Mangalore. This treatment was from 18-07-2016 to 26-08-2016 and had amounted to two and half lakhs rupees. Since then from past two years , Yathish is undergoing treatment at his relatives home and the present financial situation has forced the family to stop the treatment all of a sudden.

All these obstacles have taught us the power of hope and Yathish’s sheer strength to bounce back. At present the finances of his friends and family are limited and so unfortunately have been unable to maintain treatment cost. Without financial support Yathishs future outlook is bleak.

There has been a guiding light shone over Yathish and further hope emerged at Krishna Ayurveda centre of Padubidhri . This centre is known for curing patients with spinal cord injuries and has a high success rate of 73%. Yathish and his family have a future path in the pursuit of dedicated treatment for spinal cord injuries. But the condition has reached such a level that their property is with lenders and the debt has grown to a greater level.

These fund would be useful to reduce the financial implication on his family to improve his relationship and level of stress. Yathish has a belief and also the potential to improve his condition and therefore the quality of his life. He has shown rehabilitation potential so spending time in the Krishna Ayurvedic centre will be hugely beneficial. At present the financial situation is at a crisis and his family can no longer support his ongoing need. As mentioned risk of bed sores and also risk of infection and ultimately can lead to fatality.
