Crisis - I teach a class of 96 5th graders at Shivaji Maharaj English Medium School, Bhosari. 42 are can read up to a Grade 3 text, 29 can read up to a Grade 2 text and 13 can read only upto Grade 1 text. That means only 12 kids in a class of 96 can read a Grade 3.5 and above text. This is what we call a 'Gap to Grade'. That's the crisis. The Need of The Hour - With the summer break approaching and 'Summer Slide' becoming my real fear (where kids drop at least one Grade Level due to the one month break) I need to gear up for a tough Year 2 of my Fellowship. What I need :
1. A Library - This is the most urgent requirement for my kids. With an illustrated Grade Level 1 story book costing around Rs. 300, it's difficult to establish a library for my class, let alone the three grades that Teach For India has in my school. This is mainly where I need your help. I need to buy a cupboard and around 200 - 400 books ranging in all grade levels upto Grade Level 6.
2. A Projector - Almost all private Secondary schools have a projector installed in every class . Next year, I will be teaching Science and English. I intend to use to show them the real beauty of Science with Bill Nye videos, Planet Earth and Cosmos.
I believe all children deserve an excellent education. Their poverty will not dictate their destiny. There's no minimum amount you can help me with. Even a small amount will help me buy a book for my kids who desparately need to develop a love for reading.
