FROM THE MAIN CAMPAIGN (IN PORTIA'S WORDS)

What am I doing at present?

Every child deserves an education, but, unfortunately, not every child has the opportunity to receive one. I started a free school, a Primary Learning Center in Kaza, Spiti with a student body of 20 students and counting. I have witnessed the struggles in the life of some children, especially ones living in some of the most difficult terrains of our country.

The pandemic and the following lockdown across the country has brought education to a standstill for millions of rural children in our country and it is all the more challenging for children from underdeveloped tribal areas in the Indian Himalayas, especially a cold desert, like Spiti.

This Primary Learning Center also consists of a library for children to walk in, pick up a book, and read, thus falling in love with the joy of reading. If I get enough funds, I’ll also be able to provide a one-time meal to the children coming to the center. This way, a lot of children can come and study here without worrying about the food. After all, no one can achieve anything with hungry stomachs. I’m also visiting various Government schools in the remotest villages of Lahaul and Spiti, distributing books and stationery to them, collected from all over India. During my visit to these schools, I’m also understanding their needs, so that I can help in fulfilling the specific needs of the children there.
Ultimate Vision
Over the years, after traveling to such remote places in my country, I have realized the simple joy and the importance of basic education. I soon began to envision how each child's quality of life could be improved if they had the freedom of education that comes without any cost because poor parents would not even be able to send their children to school if they had to pay fees. Often locals in such underdeveloped, rough terrains struggle to earn a livelihood. With the single source of income in this part of the world-tourism being ruthlessly hit by the global pandemic, the future for the young minds is now being forced to be pushed back by many years.

My goal is to start green and an unconventional school with the name, School of Happy Valley education, as part of our Planet Spiti Foundation and provide education to each student free of cost that includes building a school, appointing teachers and staff, maintenance of the school and staff; a playground, books, uniforms, shoes, and other stationery for the children; helping children find their passion and training them in it; providing free transportation, one-time meal, love, care, and kindness. I look at it as the only way to bring some light to these snow-capped peaks and amazingly vast and void planes of the valley that remains cut off from the world for half of the year.

Where will your money go?

  1. Running the Primary Learning Centre and the Library.
  2. Distributing books, stationery, and other items to the children of the Government schools in the remotest villages of the valley
  3. A mid-day meal program
  4. Eventually starting green and an unconventional school.
Breakdown of Funds

NOTE FROM VIMAL:

When I came to volunteer here, I was already excited as children excite me.

Volunteering with them and helping them puts me on cloud 9, all the time.

They are pure, innocent, and have one of the most beautiful ways of looking at life.

Especially, children here, at 14000+ feet above sea level, have a different perspective of life. They don't get many facilities, they don't have many basic things, we city/town people take for granted.

They need help, they need help from all of us.

Reading has always given me joy in every which way. It made me what I am now. I remember reading things, closing my eyes, and just dreaming about faraway lands or just contemplating a perspective written in the book. Everyone deserves to realize the joy of reading. Everyone deserves the right kind of childhood. I'm trying to give them that by raising funds for them so that I can help them in donating more books and stationery to the children in these remotest parts of the country.

Please do donate as much as you can and help me make a difference.
