While we cannot deny the progress of industrialized societies, we also believe that there is a means to achieve this without causing further damage to the already fragile symbiotic ecosystem. Plant a Tree and Gift a Living is an attempt by The Better India along side NAATA Foundation to reverse some part of the damage we cause daily to the environment, while also providing a means of livelihood to the village communities of Mumbai.
In Aarey Milk Colony, a neighbourhood situated in Goregaon East, a suburb of the city of Mumbai, we will be planting 5000 fruit trees like Mango, Awala, Sitaphal, Guava, Parijat, Chinch, Hirda, Bahwa, Arjun, Tulsi etc. These plants will that will not only help reverse some of the ecological damage caused to the environment in Mumbai, but will also supplement the income of at least a 100 families in the area. Each village community of upto ten families will be allocated a set of fifty trees each, the upkeep of which the community will be responsible for.
Each of these saplings will be first planted on a separate bed, and once they are two weeks old, they will be transported to the designated area in Aarey Milk colony, and assigned to a community. Each of these saplings need an approximate amount of Rs 100 for their nourishment over the next 2-3 years, after which they become self-sustained. At this point each of these trees will be sufficient to supplement the income of the community by adding an additional source of livelihood, while also restoring the green cover of the area.
NAATA Foundation and its team of members and volunteers will ensure that the trees are cared for till they become self-sustainable and start bearing fruit. With this view towards comandeering social, ecological and economic empowerment, come help us Plant a Tree & Gift a Living.
