Why Help Nagaland?

Since April, India has been battling an upsurge of the second wave of COVID-19 and across the country, hospitals are running out of beds, oxygen supply  and medical supplies. Experts predict the surge will affect most states of India’s northeast region. Close proximity and interconnectedness of the states make Nagaland very susceptible to a dangerous second wave.

As the virus spreads into the hilly remote areas of Nagaland, the villages in Nagaland are fighting the pandemic with the current healthcare infrastructure, challenging terrains for transfer of medical supplies, frequent power cuts, limited healthcare workers and inadequate medical supplies.

Amid the alarming positivity trends, and increasing number of cases and deaths, the government has proactively begun to install oxygen plants and procure medical supplies. Despite this, on May 13th, the Directorate of Nagaland Health and Family Welfare department reported that Covid-19 hospitals in Nagaland are overwhelmed. As of May 16, according to news reports, Dimapur government hospitals, which have  61% of the cases in the state, had run out of oxygen and ICU beds. There is an urgent need to supplement  hospitals and health centres in Nagaland with the necessary medical equipment to treat Covid-19 patients.

The second wave of covid-19 has hit Nagaland. Most hospitals and COVID-19 care centres are running with only a limited access to medical supplies and COVID-19 related equipments as the wave surges on. Sensing this urgency, ‘Help Nagaland Breathe’ is a campaign to garner relief support towards the public health infrastructure in Nagaland in fighting the pandemic.

OUR INITIATIVE

1. Procurement and distribution of medical supplies including but not limited to:
Oxygen concentrators, oxygen cylinders, pulse oximeters, PPE kits. These will be identified based on the needs as expressed by the Nagaland COVID War Room team and district hospitals. These will be distributed via three channels- through the Government, directly to verified hospitals and through verified on ground NGOs.

2. Humanitarian Aid:
Food supplies support via verified NGOs for families under the poverty line that have been affected by the Covid crisis and loss of primary breadwinners. Providing meals and ration kits to needy families.

OUR PLAN

Phase 1: Firefighting- Medical supplies for Towns/Villages above 33% Covid positivity Rate

Phase 2: Firefighting - Medical Supplies Towns/Villages above 15% Covid positivity Rate

Phase 3: Prevention- Masks and sanitizers, food supplies in Towns/villages (Needs based assessment will be conducted before deploying any supply)

TRANSPARENCY AND ACCOUNTABILITY

The distribution of the medical supplies will be based on 3 key principles. Equitable distribution, Transparency and Impact.

Distribution to be made as rapidly as possible to save the maximum lives. The assessment of impact shall also be undertaken on a regular basis. All details on demand and deployment shall be published on the website. All progress and details of the medical supplies, procurement details will be updated online to ensure transparency.
