About Me

I am Suraj Panigrahi, a senior undergraduate in Mechanical Engineering at Indian Institute of Technology (Banaras Hindu University) Varanasi. While working on an Indo-US research grant project to develop affordable blood pressure monitoring devices at IIT Delhi, I realized that mechanical engineering at the crossroads of medicine has enormous potential. During my fully funded summer internship in France, I worked on the design of an exoskeleton for assisting the elderly mobility. I am keen to extrapolate my learning in bioengineering further through postgraduate study and my vision is to develop affordable therapeutic strategies that can transform the Indian healthcare setting.

My Cause

I have received admission offer for one year Master of Research in Bioengineering at Imperial College London. As a matter of fact, Imperial College is ranked 8th globally. You can find the offer letter at the bottom of this page.

The tuition fee for the university is £30,000 (INR 27 lakhs). However, to accept my offer I need to pay £3,000 (INR 2.7 lakhs or $4200). I am planning to pay my expenses through bank loan which is also limited and I will be eligible for any scholarship at Imperial only after accepting the offer.
My father is a press operator in a private aluminium industry and my mother is a primary school teacher at a school in Odisha. I have been a recipient of Merit-cum-Means scholarship awarded to top 25% students of IIT with parental (father's) income less than 5 lakhs per annum. Hence, I am raising the fund.

Why Me?
I have contributed to the academic research in bioengineering through publications in conferences and journals. Some of the research works undertaken by me have broader implications like the DEBEL lab (a DRDO lab) currently developing exoskeletons for Indian army. I have also penned down articles for several reputed national science magazines. You can find my article in this month’s ‘Science Reporter’ (March 2018). I have won in several national level, Inter-IIT level prizes with two Gymkhana excellence awards for Robotics and Creative Design.
I envisage myself pursuing a career in research in biomechanics being a faculty at a reputable academic institution of India like the IITs. If you look at the profile of most professors at the IITs who have been recruited in the last 5 years, most of them have a postgraduate degree from a foreign university. So, this crowdfunding campaign is in sync with my dream. Help me and give wings to my dreams. Help me with my  #SapnoKiUdaan

Your Stance

How your click can help me?
I am launching a platform called Payforbs on April 3, where a person gets cashback every time he purchases online on Amazon, Flipkart or Jabong through my website. In return, I get a commission for the sale. So, your click matters.
However, if you believe that I am deserving enough and my cause is just, I request you to donate generously. You can find more about me here. You can also find my blog here.
I would be thankful from the core of my heart for every generous donation.
Your donation matters because that would empower me to contribute more for the society.

My Proposed Research at Imperial
My proposed master’s thesis at Imperial is titled ‘Controlling the Human Hand: Development of a Novel Musculoskeletal Model’ under the supervision of Dr. Angela Kedgley. This interdisciplinary project will produce a tool that can be used in the study of upper arm arthritis, assessment of surgical and therapeutic interventions, and the design and testing of implants, orthoses, and prosthetics. My intended project can play a significant role in rehabilitation research.
