Niramaya Health Foundation is 18 years old not for profit organization working towards the eradication of malnutrition among children from Slums of Mumbai.
Children are future citizens of India. Today's Healthy children will yield productive and better youth for tomorrow. But unfortunately, more than 50% of children residing in India are malnourished. Issue of malnutrition is being passed on to generation to generation from the malnourished mothers to their malnourished children. With the vision to break free children from this vicious cycle of Malnutrition, Niramaya was evolved.
Mumbai city is the financial capital of this country which is always considered as the modern and well-developed city to live in. But Mumbai that resided in the slums has a completely different scenario. The infant mortality rate of Mumbai slums is more than that of Maharashtra state. Though Mumbai has one of the strongest health systems in place, it is not able to reach to each household of this city. Myths and misconceptions around child health and various religious taboos make the situation worse for the children.
Niramaya supports the slum children and helps them and their families to fight against the malnutrition. Niramaya implements malnutrition interventions covering more than 10 thousand children every year. A child is identified and enrolled in this program. He/she is then screened and examined to assess his nutritional status as per the WHO protocol. If the child is identified with the malnutrition then his parents are counseled and child is supported with nutritional supplementation. Mothers are trained in healthy cooking methodologies to ensure nutritional diet at home. A child is linked with government-run programs like ICDS, Immunization, etc. to ensure maximum benefit and overall growth and development.
But this is not enough, there are many children who need the care and support to come out of the malnutrition. You can lend the helping hands to pull them out of the dark well of malnutrition.
