Assam has been hit by massive flooding for the past two weeks. The deluge has affected 57 lakh (5.7 Million) people in all 33 districts of the state and thousands are taking shelter in over 450 camps. The death toll has climbed to 37.
The visuals and images of the raw force of the mighty Brahmaputra and flood water wiping out huts, embankments, bridges, and roads have brought attention to the devastation that the survivors have seen. Humans and wildlife have been impacted equally.
Situation continues to be grim in Dhemaji, Lakhimpur, Biswanath, Sonitpur, Darrang, Udalguri, Baksa, Barpeta, Nalbari, Chirang, Bongaigaon and Kokrajhar.
Smile Foundation is on the ground assessing the needs of the survivors and mobilizing resources to extend support. The immediate needs as per the reports from the ground include drinking water, food, hygiene kits, chlorine tablets, and medical assistance.
The need of the hour is to come together and ensure that the flood survivors and affected families manage through these trying times and bounce back to resume their lives.
