As DHARAVI ART ROOM, we have always utilized the medium of art to empower ourselves and children and women of communities we work with. We believe that exploring, expressing and exchanging ideas through art creates confidence and stimulates personal growth. ART ROOM promotes a unique and fun community participatory approach. Through art and photography workshops, story-telling, reading spaces and borrowing-libraries, self-publishing, exhibitions, etc., ART ROOM aspires to keep up self-sustained community centres in marginalized neighbourhoods to explore life through art. Over the past twenty years we have reached more than 6,000 children and partnered with more than 30 organizations and institutions.

Why the physical space :
although everything seems to be moving online, both the children and us still feel the need for the physical space,
  • because houses are tiny and the number of people staying in them are many
  • due to the difficult past year and the though times, the situation at home is mostly tense and depressing, so it is nicer to be able to get out of it even if it is for a few hours
  • there aren’t many community spaces / gardens / parks and the many have shut down through the past year
  • also having a physical space allows us to have a central space within the community to co-ordinate multiple activities with the children and sometimes their parents too
  • on a regular basis, about 120 to 150 children use the art room space and the borrowing library through the week
We see community spaces as more than just a physical space. It's about growing stronger connections within a neighborhood.

Why Dharavi Art Room Needs Your Help Today :
Ever since our early beginnings in 1999, we have always run our community spaces pretty much independently, mostly through contributions from individuals and sales of our zines and books and similar ventures, but these messy times have affected both the possibilities, the last year was very difficult, and this year (2021) went pretty bleak too in terms of the funds situation, especially since activities at the art room are back to full swing, hence we are reaching out to ask for help,
would you like to contribute something towards helping with sustaining the space and costs around it, the last two rains have been very messy, so we need to find a nicer and maybe a little bigger space before the next rains start hence we need your help extremely urgently
