Help YUVA Support 1500 Vulnerable And Homeless Families Amidst COVID19

As India’s COVID-19 count crosses the 250 mark, curbing the virus within the next few weeks will be critical in containing the disease. Reaching out to most vulnerable communities at this time is of crucial importance. Daily-wage earners (such as construction workers, street vendors, garland makers, etc.) are fast losing jobs and are unable to procure food and essential items. Many households are surviving on little or no food.

Over the last several days, Youth for Unity and Voluntary Action (YUVA), a non-profit development organisation, has been reaching out to low-income and vulnerable communities in 20+ settlements across 4 cities in the Greater Mumbai area where we work—Vasai Virar, Mumbai, Navi Mumbai and Panvel covering more than 1,500 families. It was revealed that they are in dire need of support.

Individuals from disadvantaged communities (Pardhis, transgenders and many others) and homeless people are almost on the brink of starvation. Anganwadis have stopped daily food supplies in many areas; schools are closed and mid-day meals have also stopped. With the lack of daily-wage jobs, many migrant workers have been frantically trying to get on the fastest train to make their way home.

We launched a campaign ‘Together We Can’ to raise funds and in-kind support the to offer emergency relief food supplies to the urban poor, starting with the most marginalised families first. We have already distributed basic provisions to 200 homeless families, comprising 1,000+ individuals

We have followed a sensitive approach in providing families with a week’s worth of rations per package (Rs 600).  This food kit comprises of the following:
  • Rice
  • Wheat
  • Pulses
  • Oil

Today we are reaching out to nearly 800 more households and we appreciate any help from you.  We are accepting support in cash and kind (foodgrains and non-perishable food only). Together we can help them survive the pandemic.

5 weeks of relief efforts!

A quick update on Together We Can

- With your support, as part of Together We Can, Youth for Unity and  Voluntary Action (YUVA) has now distributed 11,120 ration kits (reaching 55,600 persons approx).

- In partnership with Blue Sea Catering and Banquets, we have offered 4.5 lakh+ cooked meals to Mumbai Police,  government hospital staff, migrant workers and their families in Navi  Mumbai, Wadala, and at Bhiwandi (Thane).

- We are continuing to  supply monthly rations to vulnerable persons. Each relief kit contains  rice, wheat, pulses, cooking oil, salt, soap, etc. and costs  approximately Rs 2,000.

- Our relief teams have been taking  necessary safety precautions. However, given the increase in cases, in  consultation with our Governing Board we have decided that the field  teams undergo COVID-19 testing. We have planned for the outcomes and  prioritised strategies for relief efforts to continue. Test results will remain confidential, and we will support any affected persons  throughout their recovery in partnership with the relevant authorities.
